There is no "best" standalone.

The most ideal standalone for your application is the one that your tuner is most familiar with, and supports the features you need.

If you are looking for well documented instructions with lots of support, then Haltech. The E8 series, or the E6 series. Cost is between $900 and $1200 for the unit.

If you are looking for a grassroots DIY effort which requires you to do some developement and gain understanding of what you are doing (as well as electronics skill), then you want the Megasquirt. Cost ranges from $149 to $500.

If you want a basic standalone that supports 95% of what the Haltech does at a little cost savings, then you want the Microtech. Cost is between $800 and $1000 for the LT8s.

If you are looking for a hassle that will make you want to cut yourself, then you want the Wolf 3D.
