91 RX7 Auto Trans Problem

91 RX7 Auto Trans Problem
Research found another with exact problem back in 2005 but replays or followup.
1991 RX7 the Problem is:
1) All Gears are able to be accessed with the Shift Lever, and car goes into all Gears (P, R, N, D, S, L)
2) Shift Indicator on Dash only shows "N", even when car is in Park.
3) While running and driving, the car starts off fine while depressing the accelerator for a second or so........then shifts into 3rd gear. Downshifts to first when it should but next shift is to 3rd. The Hold light function with the switch but has no affect. Has been working fine parked it in the garage and the next morning problem occurred
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated..

Based on what you're describing, I would check the inhibitor switch.
