1994 RX-7 Auto 1-2 Rough Shift

Hi all, recently bought a 1994/w auto and the 1-2 shift is extremely aggressive. Seems to be the roughest when part throttling. Anyone else seen this issue? 2-3-4 seem to shift nominally. Thanks.

Have you checked the trans fluid? It could be low. I would check that first. Also does it go away after being warmed up?

Is it always a harsh shift or just when you’re in boost? I’ve never driven an auto FD so can’t comment from experience. You might try downloading the FSM from the 3rd Gen. FAQ sticky and look at troubleshooting. And I don’t think it’s significantly different from any of MAZDA’s other autos if it does require maintenance.

Trans level is okay. Car only had 40K miles. Shifts that way even when temps are optimal.

Also check to see if there are metallic flakes in the trans oil. I would try a trans oil flush and change.

Will do, doing all the fluids soon. Anything I should look into replacing in particular? Car is all original.

Sorry missed this. Usually metal flakes means it got too hot. My 94 Supra had flakes and tranny went out after that. Had to get a new torque converter.

It IS pretty 'aggressive', so...may be nothing to worry about. Have you learned to use the 'hold' function to its best advantage? That little puppy is the key to wringing max performance out of these automatic cars.
