89-91 ECU in 86-88 Body?

ok, someone explained this to me before but I didn't quite get it.

I was told that if you want to put an 89-91 13b into an '86-'88 body you need to swap the ECU and harness. But another guy chimed in and said you can run the 86-88 ECU with the newer 13b engine but you have to do something with the harness. or sensors. I can't remember exactly what the trick was. Can anyone explain this to me?

I figure just changing the whole engine and ECU and harness together is easiest, but I'm just wondering about the other harnesses that pluginto the ECU inside the car, whether they'll plug in ok and the wiring will be compatible.

Thanks!
Dave

I put a 89 TII engine in my 87 TII you have to reuse the stock engine wiring harness because you will be reusing the stock ecu, make sure to reuse the stock injectors because the resistance may be different, plus the connectors are different between the two. When i say stock i mean the original one that came with your car and not the one off the new motor. And the tps is different so you will have to reuse the stock tps and tb.

ok, cool. But I'm still wondering if you use an 89 or 90 ECU and engine harness, will the other harnesses inside the (86-88)car plug into the 89-91 ECU?

Thanks!

the 86-88 and the 89-91 harnesses are very different, so you either need to use all of one, or all of the other. you can't easily mix the two.
