FL S4 vs S5 t2 diff

I've been doing some research and can't find much info on the S5 diffs. I'm finishing up my t2 swap and I'm about to pick up a diff. I can get a s5 for a lot cheaper but I I hear the s4 clutch type is a lot better then the s5 viscus type because you can shim them. I'm gonna be making pretty much stock t2 power. What do you guys think my best bet is?

+1 on the garbage

it makes a good home for a real diff when you get one since it still has the bigger shafts versus the NA.

I talked the guy down so I'm getting the s4. One more question. Right now my car has completely blown suspension. The guy I'm buying the diff from has almost new tokico blues with eibach lowering springs for $150. Would those be decent for sliding or should I just save up for the coilovers?

$150 isnt bad if you really need them
however, i'd suggest spending the $650 on godspeed coils or something and when you really need to upgrade to move to stance, DG5, or something better.

What about BC coils? I can get them from a local shop for $850 with a warrenty but I haven't seen much info about them on the club. I think I am going to try to get the tokicos for now. My suspension is so bad, it's like riding in a boat... Love your car by the way Buckey.

First time I heard good things about godspeeds on fc's myself. Got myself a set of stance GR+'s and they feel good, but I havnt really got to put them through their paces yet. 50 miles after putting them on one of the front brake calipers started leaking -_- was a good excuse to throw two front remans on with mazdatrix stainless lines.

I figured you would have rebuilt them. How much were the remans?

Not trying to threadjack.

Everyone else: The thing that worries me about godspeed coilovers is i highly doubt those things were tested on a shock dyno so theres no way to know how fast they fade or if they are balanced or what. There's no data to confirm or deny this. Also, the shafts up front look weaksauce and prone to bending.

At the same time, unless you're jump drifting and beating the **** out of your car running off the road, dirt dropping and have the ***** and/or skill to NEED a pro-ish to pro level coilover it shouldn't be an issue.

The new stance coils are ******* beast. BC is a good buy if you're interested. The driftworks coilovers about look to be the same level as pbm, BC and stance (base model stance). The guys across the pond swear up and down driftworks/cs2 coils are pretty ill.

Any suspension is better than stock. You have alot to gain from better spring rates and damper valving. It CAN make for a bumpier ride but gives you way better feedback and overall feel of your vehicle. It scares the **** out of women for sure. A friend of mine road in my car saturday and i just STAYED talking and kept her talking so she wouldn't freak out. I kinda like not having a cd player.

Either way. Tokicos w/springs and an lsd is going to make your car feel awesome compared to an open diff with blown dampers.

So true. Taking a lady-friend home last night was entertaining to say the least, every gap in the freeway got my car airborne and she'd scream. 10k Tanabe springs on bleeding KYBs is not a great setup, but better than OEM for the sidways actions.

Thank you! this is what i was looking for! Are the vlsds known to break at the welds since they're torsens and not opens?

So little update. I've had my car on the road for a couple months now and my diff doesn't lock all the time when I slide. I've heard of shimming them with soda cans or something or getting the oversized washers and disc from Mazdatrix. What do you guys think my best bet would be?

Well, the cheap ghetto route is the soda-can locker. Proven method is using a shim kit.

I drink a lot of Arizona Iced Tea, so the choice for me is simple.

Yeah it's over $200 for all the parts from Mazdatrix. Is there a writeup with pics on how to shim it? I searched but there was only a couple threads and they didn't have pics.

that soda can method sounds ghetto to the max. and 200 bucks for some shims? thats not expensive at all.. if you think thats expensive, go look at some kaaz or cusco lsd's and the shims will sound a lot better. Cars are expensive, if you dont have the funding for an lsd, weld it.

I know how much a good LSD goes for. I'm just starting out and don't need a $1000+ diff. I also don't want to put an n/a welded diff on.

I know $200 isn't a huge amount of money but if the home made shims would work I could put that $200 towards something else. If not then I'll buy the ones off mazdatrix.

does anyone have a # in which they hold at? id like to get a general ballpark figure, since i plan on swapping a t2 rear end in my NB, and if its a low # then i wont weld and will just reshim an S4 t2 diff and throw it in. thx

Shim the T2. I did mine and I love it. I used some washers from a na diff I had laying around but you can make shims or whatever. I added a total of .04mm and it chirps just a little bit when I'm going really slow but it's not nearly as bad as welded. Anything over like 5 mph and it doesn't chirp. Locks great though. Feels like a welded when you're sliding. Super predictable.

i had mine shimmed, and it lasted 3 weeks.... now it's 1 tire firing hard.

buy a real diff the first time and be less invested then the half *** route.
Mazdatrix can get KAAZ, OS Giken, etc hit them up.
