Mazdatrix gxl diff rebuild.

My diff is shot. Like most tuners, i'm a poor bitch. I want to drift but i'm not welding up my lsd after weighing the pros and cons. If i want to street the car, understeer. I can't drift to the grocery store, though it would be nice.

Mazdatrix has two clutch packs. Thick and standard. For drifting, i'm going with the thick set since the price is about the same. Should i get the amount of lock i need to get rid of the nasty one wheel fire? Is it possible to stack more than 8 disks in there? I did a search (gxl diff rebuld/gxl lsd rebuild) and found nothing so i'm asking you.

Im going to break down the rebuild cost for you.

cone disk - 2 needed @ $41.60ea = $83.20
+1mm inside pin disk 4 needed @ $48.44 ea = $193.76
disk with outter pins 4 needed @ $35.07 ea = $140.28
oversized thrust washer 2 needed 2 $14.81 ea =$29.62

Grand total $546.86

KAAZ 2 way LSD $995.00 (give or take 10 bux)

Difference $448.14

Id save the extra cabbage and just get the KAaz unit. Just to rebuild your old LSD your looking at over half the cost of the Kaaz.

hes right man. or if you want to save a few bucks just get the tomei 2 way its like 100-150 (give or take) less and will do better than a rebuilt stock unit ever could even dream about doing.

Yeah, the cheap do pay twice. I pulled up the kaaz lsd on google and after looking at the mazdatrix vs the kaaz, i'm sold. I'd be getting more than i payed for actually. Better modulation, 1.5 or 2 way just by swapping 2 parts, beefier disks, more consistent engagement and my favorite, longer life.

I did a search and could not find the tomei lsd for the fc. Everything else you can think of popped up though. 240, 240, 240, supra, 240, 240, silvia, 240, 240, 240........

I have a Kaaz 1.5 diff and that thing is the ****! But that thing is noisy as hell. Clunks and moans at just the slightest turns. Most people who ride in my car think its broken. LoL.....

https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...6&d=1145300370

Just that entire OUTER ring!?

I only ask b/c i got a dirt cheap quote from the machine shop ($20). I'm going to machine to max crush b/c i want this **** to LOCK when i say LOCK. Wonder how i'd change it to a two way with a little work on a milling machine? Hmm.

I'm open to ideas.

Keep your whinny auto-emo bullshit out of my thread please. Dont want to help? Dont post.

stock diffs are 2 ways stock, but not aggressive 2 ways like the aftermarket ones. its more like a .5,.5 way as it doesn't ever get full lock, it just tightens up some what.

if you machine that (piece that you pictured) dont forget you have to add an equal thickness shim under the bearing on that side, or you will have tons of slop and incorrect backlash set on your ring/pinion gear.

if you get it too tight, it will act like a welded diff, the clutches wont ever slip.

So all i do is machine the outside ring of that plate? Correct?

I just need to verify b4 i take it to the machine shop. I'm going to work on pulling it out during the weekend and possibly during the week depending on the weather.

I need pictures of what you're talking about techtrix. Can you help me out? Plus, others are going to want to know how to do this and get it right.

I'm going to add a full write up with pics to this thread also now that i have access to a camera again. I like to contribute/give back to the forum.

Glad to know our diffs have some lock on decel. I'm eager to take it out for inspection. I'll take measurments and pull it apart monday or tuesday.

I was thinking about doing the same thing to a s4 factory clutch type i picked up. just pack more clutches. but it dont ever get full lock no matter how much you pack it? do the even make aftermarket lsd for a non turbo diff?

Do they make aftermarket? Yes.

Kaaz, cusco, tomei.......

You pack enough disks in there (gotta measure play) and it will lock and stay locked all the time. Might as well find an open and weld it b/c it defeats the purpose of LIMITED SLIP.

Still waiting on someone to answer my question....... *taps foot with arms crossed*

instead of removing material from from the diff cover, go to the hardware store and pick up some shim stock. its a roll of aluminum. it comes in different thicknesses. cut it in the shape and size of a stock clutch disk. add it to the clutch stack when you re-***. the diff on the end of the stack, where it wont turn and wear on the aluminum shims you made. add as many shims as you want to set the preload. (.5mm?)

you can also use aluminum cans for the shim stock material.

same as cutting the diff cover, but you can change it at any time to adjust it. thats what i ran befoere i put in a kaaz.

open na diff cost free
haveing it welded cost $20-30?

well I dont have any understeering problems with my welded like most ppl talk about.. I kept up with a R6 bike on a freeway on ramp lol and his knee was on the ground, it looked amazing in real life than television lol.
Maybe welded is just fine for me?

Thank you, techtrix!

Shim it between the conical spring and a friction plate?

.5mm? I really dont know.

Probably what i could do is take a spare set of stub shafts i have laying around and make some sort of dealie i can put a torque wrench on using some scrap i also have laying around. I can squeeze one stub shaft in a bench vise and measure the break away torque with the other. I can just play with it until i get what i want. Probably around 60-80lb/ft to start with. Trial and error. Now i'm motivated. I'm going to wake up early as **** tomorrow (it was 72* out today and i slept in LATE) and get started!

Dkwasherexd: I have an open diff. I AM getting it WELDED FOR FREE. Some of my car savvy friends and I would like to do auto x which is something ALL of us can partake in be it fwd or rwd. A welded diff isn't going to do much for my times and i think auto x will help my driving out ALOT. Yeah, i'm a drift nut. No doubt about that but i'd like to get SOME of my friends that think STREET RACING is cool to get out of it, quit being stupid and realize they can have MORE FUN at the track.

More or less i want to run the welded but as a LAST RESORT at this point. I found a cheap alternative to it so i'm going to give it a try. I wasn't implying that my car would understeer at speed from using a welded diff.

Well, i got the rear end completely taken apart today.

I looked inside the diff when i pulled the half shafts out. i was like "oh please god no dont be an open diff."

I cracked the pumpkin knowing what it was already. Sure enough, it's an OPEN DIFF.

One more strike agains the original owner that lied about thing after thing after thing. Everything but the engine rebuild checks out. I've been pissed since about 3:00pm this afternoon. I still haven't cooled down. I suppose i can snag some brake lines off the parts car tomorrow and get my ss lines later. I need a stock clutch-type diff. Now i have 2 opens to weld but that's besides the point. Can't f-ing trust anyone with their word anymore. I hate people who like to screw people over. I hope karma wraps his *** around a telephone pole.

dood I got ripped off the same way. I bought a $800 shell with supposedly a race race ported rebuilt na motor with lsd. turns out the motor had stock ports -_- and compression was 80psi all around, and it was never even rebuilt -_-. Then I sell the shell [because I needed money] telling the customer it had lsd, and the customer calls me back saying its open diff.. -_- damn.. those ppls. I was mad, and the guy originallywanted $1000, good thing I lowballed him down to $800. even that I got ripped off. Just cant trust some ppls...

No ****.

On the real though, the rx7 owners that are in this for the love have showed me nothing but.

I'm not even getting into it right now. I typed up a long rant but this thread can do without it. For the sake of doing a write-up, i'm going to bite the bullet and buy an s4 na lsd within a couple of weeks. Just posted a wtb thread up locally and hopefully i'll get some bites.

FTR, that ******* would be wrapping my na-t eclipse into a pole that i spent two years and six grand building. Took credit for ALL of it. Said it was sitting in his daddy's shop and he sold the fc to buy the turbo kit. I'm about 25 minutes from where he lives. Buzz travels fast in the charlotte/monroe/wingate, NC tuning scene. Everyone knows everyone. If not personally, from their car.
