Manual rack vs power steering
ive been wanting to get rid of my powersteering to clean up my engine bay id like to get a manual rack but from what ive heard powersteering is better for drifting ive always had powersteering and never had a problem drifting with it, my buddies with manual racks say that you feel the car control better?? any input would be great

Hi,
I don't think that I will help you a lot, but we can read some of these testimonials everywhere : pros, cons, but the only thing I can assure you is that the driver makes the difference.
It's worth a try, better than 10 pages of "yeah it rocks like mine" and "no way you're dumb".
All about your feeling, your own preferences and your style.

drifting without power steering (unless in a corolla, which is debatable imo) is the worst idea, ever. Im sure anyone here with a half decent amount of time driving will say the same thing.
There is nothing to gain from removing your p/s in a car that you plan to drift unless you dont really like being able to control your car completely.
I would try a remote electric pump (as other mentioned) at the very least if you main concern is just cleaning up your engine bay.

Been drifting manual for the last two years. It's hard at first but now it's easy.
Only issue I have is wrist strain after 4+ hours of drifting.
I'm actually switching to a depowered S4 TII PS rack soon. I just have to gut it first.
It will give me a better ratio. Then some knuckle mods and I'll be golden.

never drifted my FC without PS, but I did slide an Sr S13 without and it was a workout. At complete lock it felt as if the steering would bind, it took everything I had to pull it off. But then again that was an s13 not an Fc, I donno. It wont be 100% the same but try pulling your PS belt one day and see how you like it

Well I was finally able to drift in my buddies manual racked fc and there was nothin to it, I mean yeah it felt different, like the car reacted to any small amount of steering I threw at it, the steering wheel slightly jerked when I hit a bump but nothing too major

I slide mine with a manual rack also. All personal preference and a lil getting used to if going to manual rack. Depowering your power rack is shitty in my opinion besides the steering ratio...

I have had manual, depowered, and PS.
I love power steering the best. It is like cheating. It makes everything easier from daily driving to drifting to dangerous canyon racing at 1 in the morning. I have no problem pushing a car to its limit without the "feel" of a manual rack.
Just my opinion. I am also a skinny short dude (for a white guy) so physically it is easier for me as well having power steering. I currently DD and track a manual rack. Can't wait to put power steering on it.

There's trade offs between ps and a manual rack.
With a manual rack, you'll get more direct steering feel, but steering will require more effort, which isn't a big deal if you're a guy with at least moderate shoulder strength. But it's one of those things that some people will end up hating after a few minutes.
As far engine performance, you won't feel a difference in power by not driving the ps pump. If you'd like to know what manual steering is like, turn the key to ACC and turn the wheels back and forth a few times to simulate a parking situation. Then try coasting (engine off, safe environment) and steering, as it's easier to turn the wheels with the car rolling. It's not terrible. It's a matter of preference.
However for some of us, our daily-driven cars are already pretty hardcore street race cars, and anything more towards that end would just be too much.

It seems like manual rack would make it much harder to throw the wheel really hard, which would make it really hard to make the car transition really fast, which sounds like a bad thing.
Why give yourself the extra handicap? And who cares about steering feel when you're drifting?

Manual steering at full-lock, for me, has a point at which I would feel as though I can't pull it back to transition; but, its a mind game. Because I can; after the transition to the next slide, I have to assist my steering wheel a little bit to get it were I need it. I like to say that it is more precise, in that I have to go through the run in my head beforehand, or I'll spin out, or not get too much angle to stay on my line. There is room for error, but I can really feel when I've given it too much, or too little.
Keep in mind: I'm new, I don't talk drift slang(if it's real), I'm in a S4 N/A with 190,xxx miles, I hope I helped.
