JTP Best Steering Setup?

I remember one time you told me to change out the steering to like a 12 series setup...

Can you expand on that now that we have this forum avail to us???

he was probably talking about modding a ps pump bracket from a 1st gen to clear space in the engine bay.

It means to use the power steering bracket from late model 12A because it allows to lower the position place of your power steering to give you more room up top ...

Nah, the 85 GSL-SE bracket... they had 13B's in them... and the PS placement was lower, and the mount bolts up to the 13BT's...

Yeah, they are sometimes hard to track down... but basically they have the same bracket bolt pattern, as the 85 GSL-SE was 13b. They are cast Iron, so they're heavy as ****... I'd recommend shaving as much weight off of them as possible. The 85 power steering pump had a slightly smaller housing, so you will have to machine the hole for the pump to go through to fit the 2nd gen pump housing... the 3 bolts are the same pattern, so you can use them.

As far as belts to fit, just take a string, and tie it so it is tight with the pump as close to the main pulley as possible, and take that down to your local auto parts store, and match it up to a v-belt that would fit.

If you approach it correctly, you shouldn't have to remove any lines off the pump/rack... just unbolt the pump from the stock bracket, and replace with your machined GSL-SE bracket.

It's very straight forward, and you shouldn't have any trouble, once you actually track down the bracket.

hey, sorry about not catching this earlier...

yeah, gsl-se bracket.. hard as **** to find, but they work awesome. i have one i'm going to modify and get replicated hopefully sooner than later.. it's definitely easier to do front mounts/v-mounts with this setup..

dave, we need to talk about mr2 pumps.

But seriously do you think its something I should work my ***** off to find... or where should I go with it since everyone is saying it is such a hard find... Or do you think I will eventually find it and the wait is worth it???

Do you have your intercooler piping installed? If not I would get the bracket prior to doing that.

I have had a GSL-SE bracket, and have since switched to the MR2 setup... If I was to go back to mounting the stock pump, I would probably just take the stock mount, cut off the portion that comes out at a 90(where the pump mounts, and weld that piece onto a 1/4" thick piece of steel, and drill the lower mount holes(that you can use the stock part of the bracket you just cut off for a template) keeping in mind that you have to correctly align the PS Pump pulley with the main pulley.

It should be pretty straight forward as well... just a few headscratches along the way, and you should be golden.

If you were closer, I would do it for you... but Pitts is so ******* far from here... haha...

Mr2 Setup...Ok maybe we should switch gears here... LOL Is this a better way to go.. remember Im at a point where I can do whatever.. and also I wanna TRY to do things the "first time around" I m not tryin to do it fast or nothing .. I just wanna try to do it the best way so I dont have to pull it all out and do it over again... so maybe we should discuss the MR2 Setup?

i've had some failure's with the stock pump when sustaining high rpm's.. i believe dave has been running an electric ps pump for a couple years now, with only having a rack failure... i'm looking into options to have the rack beef'd up and also going with the electric pump setup.. it theory it's all +++'s
