I've noticed a small trend among drifters......

http://www.ziptied.com/

Scroll down the page. There is an article about a guy who for whatever personal reason is taking a break from drifting. He was talking about being on his bike.

I scroll down further and you see him riding flatland bmx, which i consider one of the coolest artforms ever concieved.

I was on violentrunning.squidd.org looking around and saw that some of their members skate.

Skating and bmx seems to be another hobby that ALOT of drifters enjoy, including myself.

I can see the transition from boards to bikes to sliding a car sideways. That's what brought me into drifting. I started skateboarding when i was 12 and i've been jumping my bike off everything i could find since i was 8. I got my first car (1976 plymouth "ruster" duster) and didn't even feel the need to drive it (and i never did) because i had what i needed, my bike and my skate. Together, we were an unstoppable force and the world stopped when i was on either. My talentless *** finally had something that made me feel like i was a human being worthy of life. I paid $165 for my next car (mazda 626) so i could drive to skate spots and drag my friends around with me. When i got bored skating, i'd pull my ebrake and drag the *** end around while trying to turn. Did it all the time. I had no idea what drifting was then. I just had fun sliding. My transmission gave out, left the car where i was and started reading super street and watching videos. The more i found out about drifting, the more i wanted to get serious about it and here i am today putting my fc together as a slideable street car.

What i love about drifting is it's 100 percent a freestyle sport. Technically fwd isn't considered drifting among the rwd slide crowd but it's still fun and if you can do it well and you're having fun what else does it matter? It's all preference, just like skateboarding and bmx. You dont have to run 'x' part because 'guy b' says 'guy a' runs that part and is the best...... You dont have to spend an assload of money and have a baller setup to do it and most certainly dont need it to win. This isn't high stakes drag racing, it's not the redneck left turn at 200mph nascar, it's just sliding your car as good as you can and constantly learning and working to get better at it while having FUN. You dont have to drive for anyone but yourself. You can go at your own pace. You dont necessarily have any pressure from anyone to tell you what to do with your car. I sure dont anyway.

It was completely different when i had my eclipse though. People would come up to me telling me "so and so got a new part and is going to rape your *** next time you race" and then i'd be cashing in stock and working like a slave to buy something just to give me a little bit of an edge over the next guy so i can win. When you have that "street racer" image planted on you and all your friends are constantly bugging you to race, do this, do that.....it's easy to lose the ability to think for yourself and make you a slave to your car and the sport. My car was on jackstands or in a shop getting tweaked on more than i drove it. I felt i had to be the best. More hp, more traction, more speed, faster shifting, better launches, the ability to beat on my car over and over and over again without it letting me down......... I spent alot of coin on my car and "sanctioned" (yeah right) racing and i'm very lucky i never killed myself, anyone else or got busted.

I'm still riding bikes and i'm still skating. I have fun with my friends but i ride hardest when i'm by myself doing without their praise and/or pressure with my ipod blasting in my ears and the wind in my face. I think i'll keep this up with my drifting. BY MYSELF. The locals ask their friends "so what's brandon doing with his rx7. I heard he got 2. Is he going to race them?"

"No, he says he's building a drift car"

"Oh, that's gay/stupid/insert ignorant response"

Good. I have NO competition anymore.

Not sure how many of you on here are on ziptied as well but I have been on there since the begining and I would say that at least for those of us that lived in Japan we were totally absorbed in to drifting and it was something that most older guys did not understand and was quite frankly upset with. We did it because we loved it. It was great because nobody had those stupid conversations about what parts you had and why someone else was faster blah blah blah. We could go and drive and just giggle at the guys who were rolling hondas or 240's with a muffler and air filter acting hard.

As with everything Drifting has changed and more and more posers are on the scene and more people saying blah blah blah and the Pro series is another chapter that has changed lots of guys back to just doing what they enjoy and from all of this many of us are taking our bikes to the track and doing tricks and stuff in the down time or when riding to the bathroom etc... I think drifting is definatley made up of skateboarders, bikers and other extreme sports guys, that is why it is cool to be a drifter.

I used to skate and then moved to BMX after all my friends stopped skating. I definitely pushed the limits of my driving when I first got my license. and kept doing it ever since. I think its in our blood to push everything to the limit whether it be skating, bmx, snowboarding or drifting.

yeah i skated for years then i stopped cause life happens. lost my abilities but could afford a car. drifting came pretty natural for me as did skating while i was in school. i still always steal a skate if its around and try to prove to myself that i can still do it but im too afraid of kicking my ***. can still handle a planter and 6step though.

i just started back up skating (rollerblading) and its a great thing to do and push yourself. I dont know if its just me, but all my friends push ourselves to do better skating just like we push ourselves drifting.

I was very very involved in skating for like 8 years. I think I always need to do something stupid and dangerous to keep my head straight.

I used to BMX when I was a wee little boy, skated throughout junior high and skateboarded throughout highschool. My FD was my first car when I was a senior and I still have it to this day. I had always done open track days with The Drivers Edge here in Texas and have recently been racing Formula Mazda with the SCCA for the past 2 years. I haven't been in the drifting scene very long but I have always respected and enjoyed the sport. I always enjoy sliding my FC around and I think because of just knowing how to react on your feet, bike or board gives you a better sense of car control. Hopefully 2009 will be my year of motorsport fame

I feel that. Definately. Things just come naturally sometimes but usually when you're not thinking about it and the "autopilot" in your brain kicks in.

Great support in this thread! Keep it going!

Lol sidewayzgtu!

P.S. Brakeless riders, haven't you ever thought of brakeless drifting? Meaning, thought of but wouldn't actually try it because it's stupid dangerous? Just thought i'd ask to see if i'm not the only one.

I ride breakless because it forces me to follow through with the trick I am about to do (its pretty hard to jump off your bike when your headed towards a ledge or a set of stairs). I feel that drifting kind of flows for me and if I force myself to do it then I mess up. Riding breakless made me learn how to flow on a bike. I dont really use breaks (e-break) unless I need to correct understeer when drifting.

I don't think its that suprising.

Most of us in Chicago, around cars, started off from skating.

I used to skateboard when I was like 16... back then parks weren't even readily available for us kids to **** around. So we street skated.

In front of schools, parking lots, locking docks. Whatever we could find.

When everyone got cars and got their drivers licenses...

I guess you can say we just moved on to another type of hobby

But the spirit remains... Being rowdy as **** and always looking for trouble

iirc, most of DA were either skateboarders or bmx'ers.

i skateboarded for a couple years, but then stopped when i just didn't have the balance. started getting into cars, started doing the honda drag racing but got bored of it. started drifting and having a blast at the same time.

Wow man, I loved what you said. I'm not a huge drifter at all but I made a real connection to what you said that its a freestyle sport. I'd get more into it fer shure if there was anything but drag racing around here.

extremes

I did skateboarding early on, so I agree with the "pushing to the limits".
I really hate going running/rollerblading with friends who half-*** it. I am always trying to see what my body can do like most of you. I don't like being the 'norm' or anything that mainstream society is into and this is why it fits me.

Then we take that limit pushing and apply it to our limits of grip/slip. I am still a beginner but whether I am in my 3 or ls1/13b 7 it is always a competition within myself.

My girlfriend rides brakeless flatland as well. She always scoffs at me when I mention I want a hydraulic e-brake. She says I shouldn't need any brakes. lol

I do a bit of trials and mountain biking so i guess you could put drifting and them together.

My bike and my car are the only possessions I can't live with out.

Haha, I didn't even think about this. I've been riding flatland and parks for years. I used to skate a long time back too. They must go hand in hand. Now I just try and juggle time between riding, my car and the lady friend. That's when it gets complicated.

Yeah. It's tough trying to enjoy everything when you want to. Especially if you have a healthy, active life.
