225 on a 6???? wow.....pesonally, I thought my 7 was a fair stretch.

I would think tire compound does more for grip than tire size, especially if none of the manufacturers make any of the new tires in that size.

on a 6, I would go with a 195 RE-01R or a 205 RT-615 (The 195 RE-01R is wider than the 205 RT-615)

If you really wanted 225, I'd have to go with R-compounds. The thing I don't like about overly wide tires on a rim is that transitional response gets sluggish.

I'm probably going to get in sh|t here (this forum) again. This is a 7 forum for sure, but most of us own other cars too. Given that fact, I've tried my utmost to avoid mentioning my car by maker or model. Sometimes I think folks here feel threatened by anything NOT a 7 when you mention it, then the flaming comes. On the other hand, there's great people and brains here, so what if I solicit their advice for my "other" car?

The 15x6 rims belong to my TVr 390se. TVR put bridgestone s03's on at the factory. If after all their testing that's what works best for that setup, that's what I want to stick to as closely as possible.

At 44psi I really don't feel sidewall roll, but can say that it holds a corner as well as my fc on stock rims, stock rubber size.

I think you're being a little too touchy....he said upgrade to a 7 inch or 7.5 inch rim for that tire size, it's generic tire advice.

My point is that tire compounds change from year to year.

Back when the S03 was out, Yokohama introduced the AD07 which far and wide stomped every single other tire out there. It was just double the price per tire of it's competitiors.

Then Falken and Bridgestone released the RT-615 and the RE-01R respectively, which had very close performance, but a much more budget-friendly price tag. The overall grip level of these new tires far exceed the ones from the S-03 days. These three tires would probably be running neck and neck against the R-comps of those days.

My advice is to take advantage of new tire technology and go with a newer tire, at 44 psi, you're losing quite a bit of grip if you use that car to drive spiritedly, especially as the tire heats up, since you're already bordering the maximum cold pressure that the tire is rated for.

For example, my car runs the best when I can keep the pressure around 35-37 psi, optimally at 36. For reference, my tires' max cold psi is 51.

Of course, if that car is just a beater, then put whatever affordable tire you want on it.

Not really I speak from forum experience. It took me a full year to come back to this forum after being told to STFU. And all I'd really said to be told that is "your FD isn't rare, it's made in the thousands, my wedge is 1 of 103 made ever". ( to put things in perspective)

I basically got back a "shut the **** up, this is a 7 forum, f*ck off and go away".

Okay roen, thanks for the advice. In all honesty I'd really only been considering tread and width. I had not realised compounds changed so such in a decade or two.

It was just a suggestion. I drove my friend's stock miata in auto-x with 15x6 wheels and 205 tires and felt the tire roll around, then drove it again with 15x7 wheels with the same tires and it felt much better.

I wait until there are deals on local forums to get tires and grab them when ever they are cheap instead of thinking about them a week before the event.

I am still beginner level so I use crap tires on the backs. The fronts use brand new tires because I've tried tired old tires up front and all I got was understeer.

I've got 8 15inch 205 tires sitting at my house for the rears. Then I plan on buying new Federal 595's in 17 or 16inch for my front tires.

The federal 595's are really cheap for some decent performance. I bought 235x40x17 for $64 a piece off of ebay.

It's also about the surface too. I don't enter an event at SIR in Tucson because the tires are shredded by the coarse asphalt. FIR's skid pad though.. Nice and smooth. I can put 10+ laps on a set of tread and do less damage than 2 laps at SIR.

I dont get why people on this site have to flame on drifting so hard. I dont know if i like what it has become either but bottom line its fun, you can prove you can push the limits of your car, and you can get a good adrenaline rush out of it. idk why you guys do what you do but to me thats what its all about. i have done drag, drift, autocross and to be honest idk what i like better.

To each his own.

If i tell my gf that cheerleading isnt a sport im expecting to get smacked same if you tell a drifter its not a sport. stop hating you dont see us going in a flaming on drag or auto. and dont bunch up real drift enthusiast with friecken tokyo drift ninjas.

no one bags on drag racing cuz any yahoo with a credit card can throw his piggy bank at a car. press the gas pedal and get a quick 1/4 mile. it takes skill to drift.
i still love to drag but its true. theres people with half the driving skill that can when in a 1/4 but put the same cars on a auto or drift event and they will loose becuz of the skill factor.
