Drifting an N/A?
hey guys jus wanted to know how hard is it to drift an na and what do i need to do...im new at drifting but my last car was turbo and im not really use to na but i want to get better....so is starting off in na a good idea?

I agree with seat time.... having an RX8 as well, you have to get a lot of practice to be able to drift a NA car..... especially rotaries....keep those RPMs up

just got done today with my first drift event in the rx7 and i have to say its a differant beast than the 240 ..takes some getting used too deff coilovers,diff,dtss elim, and some tie rod spacers or modded knuckles ...o and clutch kicking lots of clutch kicking haha

I ebrake initiate all the time. Just top of second, flick the wheel out a bit, turn in and pull the brake (clutch in). Start the counter steer and foot the floor pretty much.

good stuff man...i asked because i lost my t2 with a race port engine a stage 3 turbo and 1.5 lsd and i picked up an na..i really didnt want to start over but i thought i ddint have a choice til i found the guy selling my t2 and so i might be getting it back real soon but i wanted to know how hard it is to drift an na 7

K!NCH ... it's time to make love with your steering wheel ... not war
There is a simple rule to know if you "have" to enter with your clutch or your ebrake when you are beginning : If you need to kill the speed, ebrake. If you need to stay at this speed, or need more speed, clutch kick - with NAs it may means a lot of clutch kicks ahah.
Then when you got some serious skills you can entry with a big clutch kick then slowing down for the tight corners .... and ... there is the real pleasure !

So... so try to push it a bit harder with :
- Only the wheel
- The wheel + clutch kick
I promise, it's so great when you are entering a corner way too fast (vs grip) then the car follows the perfect line .... The first time you will smile under your helmet like a kid in front of Santa Claus

i agree with pretty much what all the guys said.
seat time and clutch-kicks and e-brakes!
and tire pressures help to.
like little stuff is key.

also don't over do it on tire size. example if your fc has 150hp don't put 255/40's on the back and expect to be able to drift. having nice fitment doesn't always meen wide rims and strech a big tire. my n/a made 153hp at the wheels(bolt-ons, afc) and I had a spring and shock set(agx, pro-lines). it made no sence to put a big tire on for that kind of power. hit the junkyard get some crown vic mesh wheels 16x7+20 and some 205/55/16s run about 70psi cold in them and clutch kick the hell out of it. also try bumping the clutch. I had to do this when I had a long turn. not quite a full on clutch kick but just enough to bounce the rpm's back up.

I run a big stretch on 17x9.5's. Same width tire as i had on my 16's. Just waaaaay stiffer sidewalls. It feels ALOT easier to step the car out. I CAN power over in my n/a. Not like a rolling burnout but if i do a mellow feint in second, lift and get back on the throttle (i didn't touch the clutch pedal at all) it will side. It's really sensitive to throttle inputs while drifting. I have to "bump" my clutch as well as feather the throttle. Just braaaaap brap brap brap braaaaaap. Pedal to the floor will cause my car to spin where as before i HAD to floor it to keep drifting and do some clutch kicks. If i clutch kick pedal to the floor, i SPIN every time. I'm hoping the rear sway helps keep the *** a bit more planted. It may or may not work the way i want it to. I run about 65-70 psi in the rears and i think i'm going to go down to about 55-60 for a bit more grip to compensate for the -4ish degrees of camber i'm running. Well, atleast that's what droid says. 4.3R 4.1L I also have a welded diff. My ebrake sucks *** and is useless. Some nice hawk or ebc pads will be here eventually.
My setup is:
S4 NA. Stock tune. TB MOD/butterfly delete. Full emissions and omp block off. Cone filter.
Welded 3.90 diff with pinion snubber (i think that helps a bit)
Sublink. 10 year old jic coilovers with unknown spring rates.
Secret element tie rods with megan ends
Bride knock off fixed back
330 dish wheel
DTSS elims.
If you pretend your driving a gutless 3tc sr5 hachi, you can't go wrong really.....
I was running no sway bars at the time i was doing this ****. Haven't taken the car out in a couple months but hoping to in the next week or so. Then it's time for hockey puck motor mounts with through-bolts.

Word! My NA if I had new tires I'd run 80 in the rear.
Never lift throttle. Come in fast. Clutch kick multiple times. Litterally like back to back to maintain revs. My NA only had an intake RB header a good clutch stock LSD (welded would be better) and coilovers and an angle kit.
a good seat and wheel will help you record consistent feedback better and allow you to focus more on driving and less on holding on.
I spun 18x10's like nothing on that setup. On stock wheels (ugly looking) the car felt like it had 100hp more.

thanks guys i really appreciate the advice....if i get my old car back then ill be back in my turbo setup which had 300 plus hp 18x7.5 front and back, 1.5 lsd and an rtek comp...it was pretty much set up for drifting all i need was an angel kit and coilovers and i was good to go...so cross your fingers guys and hope i get my old car back so i can hit the track next month at just drift cause i need the seat time really bad....but if not then im going to do a coilover set up on the na get some better tires for my wheels and get out there with the na

Just need to pedal to the metal and clutch kick alot. You can definitely get good smoke with na, just need commitment, keep spinning the tires as hard as you can and dont let off ever. The more you spinn them, the more the tires heat up and the more it heats up, the more smoke..

I drift an N/A 86 FC. I have aftermarket suspension, cusco rear end, 17x8 front and 17x9 FNO1RC's. Needless to say.... It can be done. Just dont let off the gas. and as the others have said already. SEAT TIME SEAT TIME SEAT TIME!!!!!
