On my current T2 swap FB project I decided to go for a full resto. During the underbody degrease the products started chewing away the old undercoating, so I opted to remove it all.

I'm about 6 hours into removing the undercoating and still going at it, but I figure it would be a good time to ask about which products would be good for the underbody... Now the underbody has very little rust, so I don't think POR-15 is necessary, and I'd rather not try to get under the car while it's on jack stands and epoxy prime it.

I was contemplating bedliner but it seems as if you need to be a professional installer to do so for the better products. I'm open to pretty much anything... Comment away

 

I have used both the rustoleum and duplicolor under coating spray cans with good results. My only complain is that one of them is not a true black color and more dark brown. I don't remember which one was brown but I do remember hating the color. I'm just picky that way seeing that no one was looking at the bottom. But all in al not a bad product for $7 a can easy to apply to.

 

After spending countless hours trying to get that junk off the bottom of the car, I'd rather use something else than the spray can undercoating... Not a huge fan at all. I was thinking something a bit harder.

Looks like a good option, I'm sure any similar schutz gun would work as an applicator too. I've contemplated spraying lizard skin on the underbody, though it may get expensive quickly considering I plan on doing the interior with both their sound and heat insulation products in key areas. I'm just trying to get an idea of what products are available on the market.

 

I did 3M undercoating from a can on mine. Let it dry, then painted over with VHT chassis and rollbar paint for a nice tough black look. It worked well for me and feels durable.

I thought about using Por-15, but I did not want to go through the acid etching and washing in my garage. Not really the space for it, plus once Por 15 gets on your skin, it doesnt come off untill your skin sheds off after a few weeks.

 

You could eat off that underbody. Great job!

 

I think what I've decided to do is finish cleaning up all the factory undercoating, either spot prime or completely prime the underbody with epoxy primer, and spray on 3Ms professional coating. I'll get some more pictures next time I'm in the garage

 

That's basically what I did, except i used 3M in a can.

Make sure you mask off all bolt holes and you don't need to spray in the trans tunnel really at all.

Most of the undercoat should go on the flat portions of the floor, basically either side of the frame rails a bit and all the way to the pinch weld.

The most important place for it, IMO, is the wheel wells.

I'd have to take it somewhere to get it rhino lined, Not an option at the moment.

Some areas I had to take down to bare steel, I think the current plan is to buy some eastwood 2k epoxy in spray cans and hit the bare steel with that first.

Does anybody have experience with eastwood chassis paints? currently looking at that with some sort of undercoating to top it off.

 

I personally have no experience with the Eastwood paint, but I would recommend getting some seam sealer and brushing it over the seams after you prime it.

I just used etch primer to protect the bare metal.

 

You should consider taking it someplace, especially after all that hard work.
