Experiences on the gap

I know some of the people aren't back yet, I wish I wasn't... My friend and I showed up around 12 and couldn't find any body at first, and there was a good layer of rain on the road when we first went down it. I must say, my tires are down to the wear bars on the back, and even giving it partial throttle comming out of the turns ended up being a little too fun. I ended up pushing it a little too hard in many places, but soon we found the group and met up with some cool people. For example: The RX3 and Rotary Pickup! haha. Well it cleared up and I had a couple good runs on the dry pavement before I had to worry too much about oversteer/understeer again. We left around 4 because it started getting wet again.

Who was driving the white GSL-SE? I was driving the light blue SA, and we were having a good time following you, but then we ran into traffic. That was probably one of my favorite parts today (besides the ride home on an equally amazing road-it was an amazing road, much like the Gap, but stretched out and much higher speeds were involved + it was dry and we saw 1 car in like 15miles)

Man, next year when my friend is finished building his Opel GT (TII powered) we are all going to ride up there and spend the entire weekend. I am really looking forward to next year!!!

Only disapointment: I didn't make it in time for the BBQ, and there was no one down at the dam. But, all in all, a great day of driving, and I am very thankful I didn't wreck my car.

Hey, I just got back myself. I was in the stock red miata. I like the color on your SA. I'm even contemplating getting my FC painted that color whenever it is paint job time. The white GSL-SE was Chad, aka Fire85GSLSE or something like that.

Hope you had fun, I know I did.

Personally I thought it sorta sucked, mainly because of the weather, but also in that I didnt really get to talk to many people, everyone was always leaving.

I don't mind getting out and raising hell with the best of them, but trying to negotiate wet roads in a 400+hp car, with downed treelimbs and sticks and **** hitting your front end is NOT my idea of fun. I found out that even though it worked perfectly last summer, my A/C didnt work at all, and I could NOT get my windows to defog to save my life...at one point I couldnt see the lines on the road.

True, i was late in getting to the meet, but it was raining so hard at 9am when I was going to leave that I decided to wait until it cleared up because I saw no use in standing around in the rain at the meet, so I left around 10:45.

IT was to my understanding, both from the description and from the map posted, that the meet was at the bottom of the dam...yet there was no sign of anyone there when I got there. When I got to the top area of the dam a bit after 1, everybody was leaving, and by 1:45, me and a couple other guys were there alone. I then proceed to go right back down the dragon where the meet had shifted to at the bottom. Once I got down there, everybody left again to go back up. I know a lot of people wanted to talk to me about tech stuff or engine building, but most everyone left pretty quick.

While I was talking to a couple of guys that were still there, it started raining really hard again and I decided I didnt want any part of going back up only to find that everyone was leaving to go back down, so I just went home around 4pm. Hopefully I didnt offend anyone, but standing around or driving the dragon in the pisspouring rain is not my idea of fun. It seemed like an utter waste of a Saturday afternoon, to me.

I agree, it was discouraging when I got there. Especially when I showed up 30 mins after the so-called BBQ (i payed for) at the dam and I couldn't find anyone. I was starving half the time we were driving, but I was having to watch out in that rain. I can see how driving a car with 400hp could be hard, I was struggling with 115 lol. I really hope next year is dry I really want to see some of the pics and video, hopefully I'll be able to see my car. Good thing no one was around when I did a 180 lol

In looking at the 'schedule" I think it'd be a good idea to extend the whole "lunch, meet/greet/bs, show and shine" time from like 11am-4pm or something. The people that just want to burn their gas going up and down the dragon can do so as they please, but it'd be nice to keep the group together for longer than 2 hours in the morning. That's my only gripe with the whole deal, having attended each of the last 2 years.

Here goes:
We need to remember the MAIN reason for this meet: Bringing rotary enthusiasts together to drive one of the most intense roads in the eastern US, RAIN or SHINE! Of course we all do want to meet the people that you only know by forum name and tech talk and everything, but the road is the main attraction. Many of those who attend travel many miles and many states to be here and want as many runs on the dragon as possible. There was plenty of time to talk and meet before lunch and that night at dinner for those that decided to stay.

Phil posted the schedule in plenty of time for everyone to know what is happening and when. The schedule was created to work for most of the people who signed up.The lunch started and ended on time and most of the attendees were there and enjoyed it even though it was raining.

Speaking of the rain...
The original meeting spot at the bottom of the dam required the cars to be parked in the grass. Well mother nature decided to drops tons of rain and forced the meet and greet to be relocated to the top of the dam. Someone did stay at the entrance of the lower lot to direct people to the top until the lunch started.

Phil puts on this event for all of us for FREE. He does not do this to make money (in fact he combined all money left over with other donations that were taken up at dinner to be sent to the owners of this forum to help keep us all connected and upgrade the site). That being said, he also has a limited number of volunteers to help him out. Those volunteers were also here to have a good time and run the dragon. It is asking a little too much for them to stay down there to direct everyone and miss the gathering and lunch/drive.

Oh yes, I wasn't complaining about how the event was run or anything, I understand that it was a lot of work to organize and whatnot, and I had a very fun time. I only hope that next year it is nice outside, and that I can come up Friday night so that I do not miss anything.

Well Said!!!

Just about all the precautions for what could go wrong were talked about on this forum BEFORE the event. If people did not bother to read them, it was their fault. A schedule of the event was posted on here, a notice that there was NO Cell coverage, and that the only way to communicate was a 2-way radio to communicate, etc, etc. If some didn't have a good time, That is absolutely their own fault. Some people just like to whine and complain. If you have suggestions and want to implement them for next year... GET INVOLVED. Phil and all the members of MRCCAL do an excellent job coordinating everything in their control.

THANK YOU PHIL and THE MRCCAL!!! ]

Personally, I thought it was really cool. It was great to be around a lot of other rotary people and cars. I think Phil did a great job of handling everything despite the weather. In the end it rained while we were eating and we were able to run the gap a few times and the road dried up and it was nice.

It was most certainly something different to do and I thought it was a lot of fun. I am looking forward to seeing some pictures!

I appreciate everyone who helped set it all up. Sorry it rained, but you simply cant plan the weather and have to hope for the best. We were able to make due with what we had and it was very cool.

Who needs the excuse of a MEET to come and drive the road? If you are just worried about burning gas up and down the mountain, you can do that anytime you want. I thought the purpose of a meet was, well, to meet.

As a sponsor of the event I'm unsure if I got my moneys worth, and a couple of the others I spoke with echoed the same. I guess since "some people just like to whine and complain" I will remember that next year when I am asked if I want to help provide for you all. Hell, maybe they'll decide to apply the sponsorship money toward gas for everyone to run up and down the hill next time, since that is the only reason for the event in the first place.

To be clear, this is in no way anything against phil or the event...phil is a class A guy and it's a great idea. I'm just unsure of the point of it all, if the idea is solely to drive up and down the hill all day. It's unrealistic to think that everyone can be up and there (especially if they arent staying on-site) by 9am that day, and it's basically geared so that if you're not there bright and early with the rest, you're sort of left alone.

I had a wonderful time. I have never been out to an event of this nature and as a fairly new owner, I did not know anyone. After this weekend's event I met a lot of people. I never felt "left alone" and I had plenty of time to meet other forum members and check out their cars. The rain wasn't so bad and for the most part cleared up before the end of the day. I would say that the weather probably kept a lot of bikers and such at home this weekend so it wasn't even all bad.

I am sorry to hear that some people didn't enjoy themselves. I am especially sorry to hear a sponser talk bad of the event. The whole weekend went pretty much exactly as it was posted besides the upper vs lower part of the dam, but you make do with what the weather throws at you. It seems odd to me that people who let the weather scare them out of showing up on time complain about not being able to hook up with anyone, especially in an area that is known for its complete lack of cell phone signal. Anyways, I hope this event continues for many years to come so I hate to hear bad things about.

And on a final note, many thanks go out to the organizers of the event, and also to those that showed up! I had a great weekend!

Kevin,

I'm sorry that you felt that way...

I'll try to explain and at least you will understand some of the issues I was facing..

1. The weather. Thats something i can not control. And caused many problems for this event.

2. I was trying my best to accomodate everyone. I know you were upset regarding not able to talk to people, but I had many tell me last year that they hoped they could head upto the dragon earlier. So, I started the meet around 10AM and thought 3-3 1/2 hours was plenty of time for people to talk and meet. I'm sorry but I could not get hold of you nor heard anything from you regarding your arrival. If I did, I would of totally accomodated you if I knew you were running late or even knew if you were going to show. I've actually asked someone if you were going to show, but no one knew.

3. Another opportunity for you to meet the attendees were at the saturday night banquet, which lasted from 7PM to 9PM or so. Which another opportunity that wasn't taken.

I'm not trying to make excuses.... I've spent many many hours trying to plan this. It saddens me to hear that a sponsor is not happy. This happened last year and to be honest, I'm looking for more of a donation than actual sponsorship. If I was to make money off of this event, I wouldn't be asking 2-300 dollars. My time alone is worth hell of a lot more than what I asked. And hearing something like this only makes me NOT wanting to do it next year.

What I want everyone to understand.. either you are a sponsor or attendee.. is that this event is put together by fellow enthuasiasts. Everyone who helped did it because they wanted an event like this. I hope some of the sponsors think of this event to give back to the community and not think of solely as advertising/getting future customers.. And trust me, I try my best to help out/ support the sponsors.. All I ask is to understand what this event is all about.

By the way, I thank everyone who came out to this event. I also greatly appreciate your donation made to the RX7club/RX8club/RXtuner ($121 collected last night at the banquet).. I'm going to send $250 in behave of DGRR2006.

Phil: I thought everything was great, and I appreciate the time you took to put everything together. I know that it takes a lot of planning to get something like this rolling and I thought it was very nice.

Richard: Nice to meet you man, thats a very nice R1 you have, take care of it man. Catch you again next time.

I had a great time. Phil and the others did a great job getting things organized. Unfortunately you can't please everybody. Being this was my first time on the Dragon, I had always heard how much fun and challenging that it was. I was quite happy, I made it through pretty good and didn't crack up the car(besides a leaking wheel seal). Wanted to stick around today, but with the leaking seal and a 200 mile trip, just wasn't feasable.
Again, great job Phil.

Hey Herblenny (Phil I understand?) I really hope what I said didn't come across wrong! I really enjoyed the time I was there, even in the rain (only thing being, me being somewhat scared I wouldn't control myself-you know...I've gotta be a responsible youngster lol) I would have loved to stay for dinner but my friend and I needed to be getting back, and I would have also liked to spend a lot more time getting to know everyone (I'm fairly new on the forums, and I don't want to make a bad impression right off-I would like to become familiar with a lot of you guys and look forward to next year)

Please don't take offense at anything I said, I have nothing against anyone at the event, I was only dissapointed the weather wasn't quite as nice as I had hoped. (rain isnt bad, but until I get new tires I needa chill out on the speeds) I would hope that we could maybe have more meets, perhaps a bi-yearly thing, but I know that probably would be too much work for the event leaders.

Oh, and if you are willing to have a younger volunteer, I would gladly help out with anything next year, or whenever we do something next. I would love to get involved but I'm not sure a soon to be 18 year old can do much to help out? Lemme know next year- and once again I hope my statements havn't come across wrong, I have had an amazing time, even though I felt sick half the time I was up there haha. Hopefully KILLBOY or w/e can get some pics up soon.

Awesome coordination, I must say!! Under the circumstances that Mother Nature gave Phil and the MRCCAL, I think he did an an outstanding job if all that people can say is that the weather sucked and they wished they caught up earlier. I for one did not have the chance to attend, consider yourself lucky if you did. Phil I hope that better weather and more participation will encourage you to continue this event next year. I will hopefully be there for my first and if the man upstairs is good a little donation also. GOOD JOB PHIL and MRCCAL. Very few could accomplish coordinating this event two successful years in a row. DGRR2007 Look foward to it!!

Well, my wife and I just got back about 30 minutes ago and I had a GREAT time! I didn't even know if we were going to be able to make it, but we got there at about 5pm or so on Sat. I'm having a hard time understanding Kevin a little bit...like I said, we got there late and I didn't know what anybody was doing or where anyone was at so you know what I did?? I stopped and freaking asked! I saw a bunch of guy hanging around a cabin with bunch of 7s out front. This guy named DJ from around Nashville (nice to have met you man) told me what everyone was doing and what everyone was gonna be doing. I met Phil at the Inn that night and he invited me to hang out with everyone as much as I wanted.

This morning we woke up and met at the Check In/Out Office and Phil announced what the plans for the day were. My wife and I didn't get to run the Gap any on Sat. since we got there late so we went and ran it a few times while everyone else went toward the Skyway. Afterwards, I hit the Skyway and caught up to the whole group and took a lot of pictures and a lot of video. We rode out with Phil and all the MRCCAL guys (lets see- John, Steven, Leo and I forgot but there's one more ) since I'm from Alabama and had a GREAT day!.

Phil, I enjoyed eating with all you other Alabama guys at Outback in Chatt. and I hope to get to hang out with you guys more in the future. I thought it was an excellent trip for the short time I was there and I hope this continues. And if you (Phil) need any help in the future planning these types things, I will do whatever I can to help out. Just let me know. -Brad

PS - nice meeting you to R1chard. And I'm glad to see the rest of you that I know I met made it home safely.

Foozberries, No prob... If I decide to organize this event again, all I ask is to sign up early and buy the shirt/lunch early. That will help me out greatly!

Jason (sonix7) - hope you could make it next year. fly over here and we'll take the Blk FD It should be finished by then.

Chad, good to hear that you made it back safely. And thanks for your help! I'll be in Nashville Next week. I have to go by Gars to pick up some parts.

Hus, Glad you made it back! It was really nice meeting you and I'll keep you updated on local gatherings and such. I think it will be cool to goto Barber's. Maybe Rolex series or track event. I believe there is an SCCA track event next weekend at Barbers ($275). Also, glad you enjoyed the event.

i know i had a great time hangin out wiht all the rotary people.. there were some awesome cars there! rain didnt hurt one bit, it just made it more fun.. drivin teh gap your still on the edge, just going alot slower. THe cold was the main negative about the "meet" part, but the food was pretty good and i like the shirt. I managed to get a pic of every rotary car that was tehre when i showed up, plus mine and the z06.. so ill put those and the video i got up tomm..

I wish i had gotten my 3rd run from NC to TN on video, that was definately teh best one.. When jason(i think thats his name.. im bad with names.. black FC that ran Pre-mix) broke his clutch, he pulled over and let josh (black loud *** FD) and me by, and i had a hell of a time attempting to keep up with him (he left me far far behind btw).. I know i was running about 95% of my potential, and i definately dont want to go any farther... We got a clean shot from about the NC line to the end of the dragon going full speed, and that made the rain, the sickness, and the gas money all worth it..

thanks phil..

and big thanks to johny and all the RRDI and Mansion people..

Thanks

Phil, Thanks for organizing a GREAT event, my daughter and I had a blast. She is wanting to get a 7 now and drive it next year. The rain sucked but the event was wonderful. I wish we could have hung around all weekend but we had other commitments. If you have any small T-shirts left over let me know she wants one.

Thanks, Charles & Melinda.
