You can prettty much cruize the whole way in 3rd, but you may have to downshift to 2nd to come out of the hairpins that exit going uphill. Heel-Toe isn't really neccessary at a leisurely pace, but make sure you learn how to rev-match when downshifting.

whatabout breaking in periods for new engines? not sure what the limits are as far as speed vs rpm's go, first time with a new engine. if you can stay pretty much in 3rd whats the average rpm and will i exceed my limit for the break-in.?

Well I think what I have been doing is heel-and-toe for EX. when I'm in third at about say 6K coming to a turn(cone) I will get on the brake with my toe while making the rpm's pop up with my heel so that when I shift to 2ND the RPM'S are better matched. Now SPIC tells me not to downshift, I was watching a video of Gap when the driver say's downshift more and brake less. He may be speaking in terms of getting the fastest times down the Gap.
P.S no worries guys, Im not going to the Gap to prove anything, I dont want to cause an accident and hurt the RX's communities rep of being responsible high skilled drivers. This will be a great learning exp.

In reply to darthrotary ,

Yes, you could drive the gap and keep the rpms under 4k or so. You could even keep your momenum up in 3rd or 4th and actually be decently quick through the corners. The laid back speeds on the gap are normally about 20-55ish.

I'm not saying don't downshift, just that you probably don't want to downshift all the time, like on a race track, especially if you don't feel comfortable. I'm really just trying to say have fun and don't try to overdrive your car or your abilities, because its not a race, its just for fun.

Couple of pointers.. By all mean, I am not an expert @ Deals Gap. I'll be inviting Rob again to give us a quick pointer.

There are two directions @ the Gap. TN to NC and NC to TN.

TN to NC is little more dangerous as you are on the cliff side of the road. If you make any mistakes, most likely you'll drop 10-100ft down.

NC to TN is better in that you are on the mountain side of the road. Also you are climbing up than rolling down. Most likely if you make a mistake, you'll hit the side of the mountain. Less life threatening.

I recently talked to a guy who went up with G35 to Nissan gathering.. he said, one of the guy lost control and dropped 25-50ft. Luckily he was stopped by one of the tree and cameout alive. Also, its a pain in the *** to pull your car out of something like that. Wrecker will have to pull it up and will do some major damage as its not easy to pull up a car..

I can't emphasize how important to make sure you have good set of tires on.
We are all going up to enjoy the drive and not to set world records. Most of the time, you can't go all out because of the traffic.

"We are all going up to enjoy the drive and not to set world records."

Well said Phil, this is the heart of the meet.

"Most of the time, you can't go all out because of the traffic."

With the amount of cars that could be there this year this will be especially true. This is not an HPDE by any means. There will be plenty of times to "have fun" but please be careful.

thanks White87fc, was theonly thing i was worried about. Speed is not a problem, been living in the lowcountry for so long i forgot how to drive in the mountains, since the topography down here is like the surface of a dime

Man I have no idea what to wear. haha, I mean what to wear on my car. since I have a red RX8 that looks like....Well evey red RX8 you have all seen, I don't want to bump into an exact replica of my car at the meet. So I'm going to add some vinyl to the car and take it off after the meet probably. Let me know what you guys like better. I thought about putting a dragon and putting rotary rally above it (what do u think) but dragons are tacky. And if you don't like the idea at all...... Well

Aren't the cherry blossoms or whatever a Nismo rip-off? I swear I've seen a 350Z with them on it.

yhea, I think it's called a sakuya tree. It's not nismo, they did a 350Z,240SX, and an RX8 in the sakuya theme. I think it looks fast but more relaxed and coo.

OH OH! I hope they don't take the bottom of the dam.

Its going to be interesting. Last year, we were the only ones at the Deals. I thought we were early enough this year. We shall see how it all turns out. I hope their group is small.

I just spoke to Phil, and I volunteered to print name tags with the Deals Gap Rotary Rally logo to be filled in with our First Name, Forum Name and Car. These will be distributed along with paid t-shirts to identify that you have paid for a meal. Those who did not pay for a t-shirt or meal, will get a name tag that will be distinguishable from the paid ones. However, all must have a name tag to be part of the group, as a name tag will also distiguish that you have signed a waiver.

I noticed that thing about the audi group as well. If it gets too crowded then I'm going to come back later on that night. I would probably be worried about law enforcement if anything. I was one of the ones that came to the RX-8 meet last fall and there were several cops there, 5 or 6 cars at least, and I almost got busted on multiple occasions.

I have been to the gap many times but they are usually only runs between the gas station and the overlook, and I'm not exactly sure how to get down to the bottom of the dam. I usually come along the lake so.... I guess I could just take a look at a map perhaps unless someone wants to post one. I've been past the damn before but not enough to notice any roads that lead to the bottom. Thanks

Chris

I think this looks like the right map. We'll be meeting where I drew in the black line if it is. Phil and a few others have been there so maybe they can let us know for sure.
