Why can't posts be edited?

Ok, this is not acusing or questioning and of the mods/admins. just a simple question.

Why are we not alloed to edit posts more then 30 mins after they were posted?

I have modded boards before and know that this is a good feature for places like the lounge but for a tech board it is usually very helpful for people to be able to edit posts.

For example, on my VERY long thread about my car, i know that hardly anyone is reading it anymore due to how long it is. So i want to go back to the first post and make updates in it so people can get a quick overview of the 8+ pages real quick and might actually read the thread.

Now the one problem i have seen is when people leave they will go through and delete/edit all of there posts. A simple fix for this is a limit on the number of edits a user can make in XX time. There are PHP mods out there that will do this if it is not already an option here.

Or is it another reason i am missing altogether?

Once again, i am not mad or questioning the mods/admins. Just noticed this and wanted to ask what the reasoning was.

If you have really moderated boards before, then you should know that this type of post does not belong in the technical forums.

I have and i know. BUT each board here has it's own mods, thus if i post it someplace else differnt mods will see the post that won't have control over anything here.

And there is not technical section to post this that i could see. so the only place i could find to post this was where it applies. the lounge was the only other place even close to better but posting it there would not help as those are differnt mods and there this would not apply as there not being able to edit posts does make sense in the lounge.

So please, do tell where it should have been posted?

I believe the 30 minute rule on editing posts was initially implimented to reduce disputes in the for sale section to prevent people from editing their posts/prices after the fact.

Right, and as i said, for things like that it is totally understandable. But for the technical boards it would seem allowing editing of the posts would be helpful.

well I didn't bother reading your post. We've been barking up this tree for years, but it doesn't get us anywhere then Mark comes here bitching at us for wanting something to change.

Read my first post, that is a perfect example, i could come up with a few more if needed.

Basically, with tech threads there are times that editing is quite nice. Be it for long threads, updating info ect.

Because if people can't go back and edit, chances are they are going to think more before they hit that reply or new post button

you can edit up to 30 minutes after you post. After that, you are held responsible for what you say. Choose your words wisely...

It is there to keep scammers from changing their posts. Yes, you can edit your post up to 30 minutes. If it's details that you forgot to add into the first post, and it's past the 30 minutes, just post again with the new details that you forgot to add. If you forgot to put the price in your thread title, don't worry about it, just make sure that it's in the first post or it won't be approved.
