Users should be able to update the original post in their for sale threads in order to remove or mark items as sold. It really is annoying telling people 10,000 times that something has been sold, just because they're too lazy to read the whole thread.

This has been brought up many times before. Although it would be nice to edit to remove items, the problem is that it also opens the door for scammers. For instance, the seller could go back and change the price or the condition of the item after it was sold. When the buyer ends up with an item that was trashed, but may have been advertised as "like new", the seller could go back to remove "like new" and maybe replace with "as is". In this case, the buyer may be stuck with a crap part that he paid a premium price for.

PMs, emails, etc. can all be modified and do not serve as evidence when we try to help in moderating transactions that have gone south. We also know that Paypal doesn't offer any real protection outside of ebay. As long as you received "something" from the seller and the seller has a tracking number, the buyer is screwed if the item comes broken or is just the wrong item.This is also recommend that all deals happen within the thread (go to PMs for the personal info) as that way, there is a record of the transaction.

So, we have to leave it the way it is. If you need something edited, you can contact a mod and he can put "sold" next to the items that are no longer available

 

Scammers are gonna scam, that's what they do. Shouldn't be an excuse to keep the feature away from honest people.

 

What we have works, so don't expect this to change anytime soon. There is just too much risk to the members of this site over bad transactions if we let you edit these posts compared to saving a bit of hassle from people asking multiple times if something has sold.

It depends on the number of parts being sold, but it often works best to sell a few parts per thread (say <10), so it is easy to follow what is left. Once those parts are gone, close the thread and move on to another.

As I said before, if you need something edited, you can PM a mod to do it for you.

If eveyone was honest, we wouldn't have to do this, but that isn't the case.

 

You could always make a requirement for editing 10 100% seller ratings.

 

What about getting a for sale thread deleted? I wouldnt mind doing that and making a new one. I have a part out thread over 6 months old with alot of the items sold and I still get people trying to buy sold things.

 

Best method for dealing with stale FS threads is to close them. A mod can do it, but this is also something that you should be able to do yourself. Go to your thread, click "Thread Tools" near the top of the screen. You should see an option to close the thread. Once it is closed, no one can post to it and it will continue to fall down the list. You could still get people sending you a PM asking about parts, but most will see the fact that it is "closed" and will usually take that as all parts are gone. Hopefully, they would also see your newer thread during the search (if you still had a part they were looking for).

We don't delete the threads since it serves as a record in case there are problems down the road. It protects the seller as well as the buyer.
