New Members Section

Disclaimer: I'm sure this has been asked many times before, however searching for "new", "newb", "noob" and "n00b" has returned no relevant results.

There should be a new members introduction subforum in between the Vendors and Tech sections.

This would eliminate a lot of the newb threads in the lounge and tech sections, as well will make the forum appear more friendly towards new members(lol).

While I'm sure the administration is no stranger to the ways other forums work, here are a few refferences of other forums that have intro forums.

www.nopistons.com has a New Members thread. They must also get, I believe 10-20 post before even VIEWING the lounge.

If this goes into affect, if somebody flames in any of the Intro threads by a new member, there posting priviliges should be provoked for whatever the crime may be.

Good suggestion B.

I was trying to imply that with the "make the forum appear more friendly". I'd expect you would moderate it with a heavy hand to keep people like me out of there

I agree, even though it brings tears of joy to my eyes to see noobs flamed, they need their own place

You guys should make them post in a new member section, and have a topic in the first section READ THIS BEFORE POSING and explain, use search or you get raped, etc and when they get access to other sections when they have 5 posts or sutmhin...

Seriously, though. Those new subforums should really help alleviate a lot of the crud in the tech sections.

I think so too

I have another suggestion, though...

On 3si.org, they require new members to spend a 24 hour waiting period where they can only view and post in the new members forums, and mandate they make a post in the new members thread, with a short intro. I think that'd be a cool ad as well.

We actually do require that new members to make a post in the new Intro sections, 5 posts are required before they can post in the Technical Sections. They can however still post in Classifieds, Single Turbo, Interior/Exterior/Audio, etc. They just can't post in SA-FB/FC/FD/Other Rotary section until 5 posts is hit.

yes it was discussed in the moderator section of the board and what should be in there as well as the rule changes for the rest of the board to help lower spammers.

It's good to see some positive change, though. So much has been negative lately.

really??? Negatives? The majority of the changes have only been done to make the board better. Such as requiring at least 5 posts to post in the lounge or creating new sections such as the fabrication sub section. These are all changes that help the board, don't you think? And are positive, right?

The new member section is something that the moderators and admins here came up with on their own, and have been working on for some time now... meaning how it works and the benefit too new members.

I think we are really moving to a much better board. The new member section should make new members feel more free to post without the typical attack, and should radicsally reduce the spam

Those certainly are positive things, but would only be notived by a relatively small portion of the board here. I was reffering more to the intellitext ads, the addition of the second banner ad above quick reply, the chasing off of relevant advertisers and acceptance of random useless advertisers, the jacking up the cost for vendors, some of the ridiculous new rules that don't benefit anyone (you know what I'm reffering to), and the fact that the forum is consitantly moving the slowest it has since Bored At Work was an active thread.

I can't believe you actually made me type that...you know the things that we don't consider to be positive changes, you've argued till you were blue in the face trying to put a positive spin on the dump IB has taken on this forum. I'm not blaming the mods or admins for those things, it's largely beyond their control, but you must admit there has been a lot of negative change over the last year. I thought Boostd7 was a poor admin, but good God I'd be content if he ran the board again.

actually Ryan started the intellitext ads, about a year before he sold it. At least now, you can disable them.

Gotta pay for those servers that are no longer in the basement of somebodies house.

the chasing off of relevant advertisers and acceptance of random useless advertisers, the jacking up the cost for vendors,
I think all the mod and admin staff have problems with that, but I do see a light at the end of the tunnel. At least there is a price schedule now, instead of a make it up as we go approach, and some vendors are actually paying less because of everyone getting charged the same thing.

some of the ridiculous new rules that don't benefit anyone (you know what I'm reffering to),
Sorry, I don't know that one. PM me if you want to discuss them. Again with the exception of advertising, almost all the rules put in place were the rules that Jason and Ryan put into place when this board was born.
and the fact that the forum is consitantly moving the slowest it has since Bored At Work was an active thread.
See I don't see that. Perhaps it is more a user issue. The only slow downs I have been seeing is when the server gets backed up at around 11pm PST. I have almost never seen them during the day or early evening. But then DKJ has been great on contacting the IB guys and putting in a trouble ticket as soon as he sees an issue.

See I disagree. While I may not agree with IB's advertising issues, I only see the board getting better. At least now there is someone to contact for a trouble ticket.

How many weekends was the board down even three years ago, because someone wasn't there to baby sit the overworked too small servers??? for a while there it was 2 times a month. And again it wasn't ryans fault... he didn't have the time or desire to keep tweaking to keep the system running.

I'm not blaming the mods or admins for those things, it's largely beyond their control, but you must admit there has been a lot of negative change over the last year. I thought Boostd7 was a poor admin, but good God I'd be content if he ran the board again.
I like Ryan... and wish him well, but I do think running the board was something he didn't have his heart in. Unless there was a major fire, he was not available and even then sometimes. I am sorry if you think the board is not as good. I see it as 100 times more reliable, and still with an absentee owner. I am willing to put up with a few more ads, to not have to pay every couple years to help him out buying new servers, that only fixed a few small issues. But then you have only been here for a couple or years (and during half that time you have been a member, IB has owned the board), so you probably don't know about most of what I am talking about.
