Yet Another Etest
87 GX just barely passed two years ago, so was expecting the worst. Threw 1 1/2 L of alcohol in a 1/4 full tank...and failed miserabley.
HC 278 Limit 105
CO 1.19 Limit 0.58
NO 515 Limit 1179 OK
But guess what..two years ago the HC limit was 120, CO was 0.67 and NO was 1356...so they've made the standards tougher. Now how does that work?? Car was designed to meet certain specs, and 20 yrs later they change them!
Anyway, CAT is over 10 yrs old and has been beaten up on the track (lots of WOT with an NA), so its probably shot. New CAT, plugs and maybe a O2 sensor and we'll see what happens.
Luckily, this is the last time I'll have to pass one of these things....its great to have an '87.

Go Hard....or Go Home
Interesting, I just did my last e-test on my 87 5.0 Mustang. It has the egr completely blocked off, high pressure/volume fuel pump and regulator, 2 of the 4 cats removed, colder thermostat, cold air intake, 3.73 gears etc etc and it was under in each category! Passed with flying colors (as usual)! So the easy way to make your car pass is to put a 5.0L in it!

True Al...but then it would corner like a Mustang lol.
Was at the last Image day July 3rd. Not more than 20 cars there. At one point there was only 1 car on the track. Usually 40 - 50 attend.

Ah yes....straight line...if life were so simple!
Stop by the SVTOA event....think there's a couple of turns (ya know,...when a car has to change direction) on that track. Now...with my limited experience, and lack of cubic inches (not sure what you mean by that) I expect to hold my own (not sure what I mean by that)!
Think your buddy with a grey GXL, and some recent cross country experience, may have some fun vs the guys (or girls) with the large C.I.'s. RX7 drivers don't feel displacement callenged. They know that size (engine) isn't everything.

- new cat
- run airpump directly to cat
- if you have some sort of fuel control, lean out the engine as much as possible. but, i guess you could be ghetto about it, and just disconnect a bunch of vac lines to create a vac leak in the engine.

I know about alot about vacuum leaks, and it would be the opposite. The computer will read the o2 sensor, and run rich as heck. i think it would be better to disconect it altogether.
Best thing to do is to get a cat for a comercial vehicle, one with an air inlet. i think the muffler shop put one on my old rex like 5 years ago, and it cost 110 all together. it flew though after that, but it was clogged in 6 months time. best to put it on, run the test, then take it off and save it. Looks like some of us could have to run the test many more times to come.

methyl hydrate... and some new plugs/wires check yor timing and try again
your puking out unburnt fuel so work to solve that problem.. get an AFC/AFR if you realy need to.. you can lean out your base line a bit to get the pass then bring it back up

Actually it's a hell of alot better to own an 86!..heh,heh..But Yes,your Catalytic is most likely Toasted after Trackin the car and runnin the N/A the way that it Should Be Run..WOT!..so,Cat.Plugs,fresh filters,Oil.Methyl hydrate Trick. If you have problems after that you could always try the Direct Air to the Cat from the Air pump trick(via the split air tube)..If you can Wait For Two Weeks..I will have a Good Stock exhaust Comin off my 86(Just need the cans til the new Exhaust gets here..all the other stuff I still have in workin order when pulled)...make A reasonable offer(if you can get here too is key),and she's yours.

for the most part, fuel input is done by metering of the AFM. if you have a vac leak after the AFM, the engine will run lean since it is being metered for less air than is actually going into the engine.
