So lately i been seeing these cars, they look like cop cars, but they have a green and yellow stripe and have some sorta Government Logo on the side. I heard they are some sorta environmental type thing. Is that true? I seen them pull people over, but not sure if they are actually cops, or have the same tyep of authority. Anyone actually know WTF they do? are?

Quebec has something similar (greenish/yellow stripes) and I think the name translates to something like "highway authority". Like cops who only give out speeding tickets kinda... And tickets for ricer-ish accessories. They hang out around Gatineau alot.

Of course it's the MTO... you should see those guys around Dudebridge! Notorious around that area! They have some crazy authority. I've seen this punk *** kid lose a nice S4 ride because he did some stupid **** to the engine and emissions... poor car got towed away that night. Not on a flat bed either!

i am thinking that. if a car is off of emissions, like 20 year old cars and such, what can they really do? I mean technically, those cars have no emmission requirement, maybe juss change my DP/MP to a DP and a Cat that way, i have the converter, but since my car is 20 years old, i dont have to be under the bar as other cars still on the emission testing.

 

Yeah...I think that once your car came with a cat...you must have a cat installed, even though your car is more than 20 years old........Other than that there is no real emission requirement.
Carmakers started using cats in Canada in 1976 (i think). But I don't think that they will bother cars that are more than 20 years old though......

 

Sounds right. I suppose the MTO could give a flip about things like suspension, but I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to modify the factory emissions setup at all.



It's like any time you find yourself at the mercy of an authority figure - much of it depends on their disposition...

Doesn't matter if the car is 20 years old,it still has to have the emissions equipment on it if these "rent-a-cop enviro ****'s" pull you over.

they're MTO

unless you're retarded they won't bother you, their main concern is trucks.

 

They are called the Minisrty of Transportation Enfocement. Their primary concern is commercial motor vehicle safety. (Transport trucks)

The can enforce any provincial and criminal law, but thier focus is mainly the Highway Traffic Act. They are trained to get really technical enforcing anything under the act.

On occasion you will see their blitzes partenered with the local Police deparatment. The reason being as that most MTO Enforcement Officers are licenced mechanics and they have the authority to to inspect and search your vehicle without a search warrent for any reason.

They are not the "Ministry of Environment"
But then they see your emmisions stuff is gone they will impound your car.

 

And if they see you doing anything illegal they record your licence plate and dispatch it OPP communications.

I've passed MTO cars on the 401 at 200+ and never even thought about it....

I wouldn't make it a rule to do that but I don't think they're concerned with anything HTA related that isn't mechanical.

I really doubt that they can search or inspect my vehicle without my permission, because I know the police can't!

They can probably inspect anything that they can see without opening the hood or being outside the car, but if I get out and lock the doors, they aren't inspecting any further than that without a warrant.

 

When someone passes you at 200kPH it's impossible to read the licence plate. You are right about mechanical stuff, safety is thier main concern with regards to the highway Traffic Act. The HTA has 300+ pages of sefety regulations and standards that the police don;t even enforce on a regular basis. This is where the MTO Enforcement comes in.

When they witness dangerous driving it's thier duty to report it to OPP dispatch. OPP does all the communications for MTO Enforcement, and they work togather to enforce road safety.

And they can inspect your vehicle without a search warrent.
