What fees/duties/etc did you pay when you ordered from the U.S.?

I am planning on ordering tires tomorrow from tire rack. I'll be ordering 4 BFGoodrich G-Force tires which come to $244 U.S. plus shipping...

I'm just curious how much of a bill I should expect from UPS at the door for their fees if anyone has ordered something similar before?

Thanks.

ups sux to canada dont do it!!!!!!!
ups will charge as much for clearing customs etc than the cost of the items.
the shipping charge to start is great but they will rape you at the door.
i purchased a rad from a guy in the us used cost me 50 us
shipping ups was 22 dollars then they charged me another 53.02 at the door
for tax and clearing charges!!

I ordered a Cusco lower control arm bar from Mazdatrix last week. I paid $115usd for the the web page deal (add $11usd more If I was to have called In) and with shipping set at $14.89usd. Well, I forgot to request that UPS NOT be the method of shipment. Result was a $49.15can brokerage/tax fee at the front door.

Last time I ordered from Mazdatrix I ended up paying $120can for a Oil filler cap after everything was said and done. Gotta hate the UPS!

UPS , my guesstimate is if the tires are costing you $ 240 then expect to pay a good $ 100-110 in custom and ups BS.

There's only one thing that UPS is good for: The UPS Store

I ship my stuff to the UPS store in Ogdensburg, NY and drive down to get it. Shipping within the continental USA with UPS is dirt cheap, and by driving into the US and picking it up, I bypass brokerage BS

Just 15% GST/PST at the boarder is all you have to pay on the stuff you bring back, 'tis all. (and that's if you're honest and declare it on your way back, which is recommended).

Though if they're *rims* you're ordering, you *could* have them installed in the US before driving home.. but that would be dishonest

There should be a UPS store at the closest US city to you. If a tiny spit of a town like Ogdensburg has one, then whatever the closest US city to Hamilton is should definitely have one. Just go to ups.com, choose "United States" as your location, and click "find locations"

Make sure that "UPS Store" is checked

Once you find one you can ship things there and they'll hold the packages until you come pick them up at $5/box.

I got pinned with a $200 dollar "importing" fee when I shipped an engine. Thats ontop of the 200 bucks it cost to ship it. $400 freaking bucks

A few years ago when I bought my 17's out of the US they came in seperate boxes and arrived at different times. Each and every one of them had a different duty amount to be paid on them. Just goes to show what customs is really like, it's partially arbitrary.

I drive down there and get it myself. I just make sure Im not the every 3rd car.

Seriously, try Purolator. They work in the states now. If not, when they ship it USPS, they Purolate it to your house. I think a $450 Item cost me $12 or something from purolator. That was after the basic customs fees. That was better than UPS when I paid over $100.

I hear fedex is good too.

I imported 500 in parts from the states, purolator cost 140 duty and broker fees and taxes. Went to Cleveland to pick up an engine- Engine cost 3400, paid 400 duty and taxes at the border.

fedex/usps is the way to get stuff shipped to you.

UPS is gay!

I've only got the item from them once.
Fedex is quick.

i'd try to get tires from a Canadian distributor instead.
www.tiretrends.com is where i got mine from. a little more expensive maybe than you might find in the states, but in the end it will be cheaper than UPS bullshit.

I want no part of UPS either. Two shipments from the states around $200 (Mazdatrix, and VB), and each cost me about $75 in customs fees.

I've learned that by the time you take into account exchange, shipping, brokerage, GST etc. you can usually double the US price in Cdn dollars, and that's pretty close to what your final cost will be.
