Weber Tuning

So I have gone the Weber 45 DCOE on 12a route - basic tune running sort of OK - 65F9 idle jets, F11 e-tubes, 155 air jets, 185 main jets, 45 pump jets, 36mm choke tubes -a bit of stumbling at higher rpms - would like to get it properly tuned - who in the GTA is good with tuning Webers? Thx Chris

Dave from Mazdee's would be the only person I would suggest with that stuff. Although I do plan to one day figure out a carb hehe.

Do it yourself. Unless you plan to take the car to someone every time the weather is different or the barometric pressure drops, your going to want to know how to deal with it yourself. Carbs are finicky and have no one set of jets that work perfectly for every circumstance. EFI cars can make the changes on the fly, carbs can not.

If a carb is tuned well and has functioning choke they usually work well in any weather. The mistake people make is setting them up for maximum power and then expect it to drive like it's a brand new stock car. My Rx-4 runs fairly well in pretty much any weather as long as it's warmed up a bit. The choke has been removed so it's tricky to get it to start and run well cold. With a choke that would be fixed. Tuning a carb is really easy. You just have to understand the different circuits and how they operate. Diagnose in what circuit you are feeling issues while driving and then adjust as required. Weber carbs are probably the easiest carb to tune that I've ever found. I love mine! Also, whenever I tune one I use a wideband AFR gauge. Some people think that you don't need that for tuning a carb, but it makes it sooo much easier.

Thx all

Buggy - the main issue i am having is missing under heavy acceleration above 4000rpm in 2nd and 3rd (4th and top are fine) also runs rich at idle - not sure which way to go on mains and airs - or if i need bigger pump jets - also wondered whether i have enough fuel coming through - am i getting starvation under heavy load on the standard fuel pump - also who in Canada can i get jets from - got all initial stuff from the US but its a pain...also totally agree with you re webers - sprinted and hilclimbed minis in the UK back the day and always on weber set ups - love em...

You can try going to a larger main jet, but it sounds more like a fuel starvation or possibly an ignition issue. I would for sure suggest a higher flow fuel pump and a fuel pressure regulator if you don't have those. Check your fuel inlet on the carburetor itself. I've seen the lines and fittings plug up with debris before. What size needle valve do you have in there right now?

As for the idling rich part, make sure your throttle plate isn't open past the compensating ports inside the bore. That will make proper idle ajustment impossible. After that just use your air bypass screws to adjust your idle mixture and speed. If it's still too rich you may have to use smaller idle jets. I haven't found a good source for jets here in Canada yet. I use a place in california, but can't remember the name right now. They are big into aircooled vw stuff but also have great weber carb support.

Thx buggy yup I think fuel starvation will try higher capacity pump also check needle valve - for idle butterflies aren't closing properly so have adjusted and will reset idle - btw can't believe how loud it is have just fabricated straight thru to free flow rear box - now understand why they have a presilencer :-)

Ya they are stupid loud with straight through exhaust. I had to go with racing beat presilencer and muffler just to make my rx4 tolerable.
