little high for an 87 Pete..Mine goes around 1/3.Towards Half when pushed. It's stock in the Cooling system..For now.You can always try WaterWetter in your System.(CDN Tire, about 11 Bucks a bottle). You may want to also Flush your System out and Put on/in a New thermostat and Cap(OEM ONLY).

But keep in mind that if we are talking about the stock gauge, it may not be accurate. They are getting old and after being rattled around for 20 years can't really be counted on for exact measurements.
1/3 is about 84 degrees on my car, while 1/2 is only 90 degrees. 1/2 is nothing to worry about but ideally the car should sit at thermostat temp (84 degrees).
A flush of the system will probably help greatly and should be done anyway.

did that
Ok, we did the flush, added new coolant. Phoned Mazda for a new thermostat, none in stock, and only one type, none for the summer, like a 72 degree.
Is aftermarket Thermostat ok ?
What is a good Temp Gauge I can buy and install, to replace my original one.

You don't need a "summer" thermostat and a winter thermostat. Get the standard 84 degree unit. Odd that Mazda does not have any in stock but it should be a next day item.
Aftermarket thermostats don't seem to work out very well in these cars.
A "good" temp gauge is relative. Any sort of quality aftermarket electrical temp gauge will do the job. AutoMeter is the standard. Avoid mechanical gauges as they are a pain to install.
