Speeding in a school zone
Back in May, I was charged with speeding: 60 in what is usually a 50 zone. The cop put it down as a 40 zone because apparently the sign on the edge of the village was flashing (40 km when flashing - school zone). Now, there were no cars, or people at the school. The school day had ended. The school day officially ends at 3:30 for schools in my school board. The time of the infraction was 4:45.
My wife went into the local clerk's office to pay the $180 ticket (plus three points!), but they have no record of it. Just last week, I got a notice in the mail saying that I had better pay the fine, or lose my license. This time I go in to the clerk's office. Again, no record. I also noticed that they put my plate sticker as '08 instead of '07 on the actual ticket. Do I have a case? Or is it too late?

I'd go to the courthouse and try and fight it.
Or, try and get something in writing from the clerk to the effect that you have no outstanding tickets, that way if they DO suspend your license, you can hopefully avoid paying the fee.

I had something similar happen; got a ticket sent them the TICKET to plead not guilty, (so there is the proof) got a letter saying there was no record of it, maybe I will get a letter in a few weeks, but I got my ticket back in March.

Yeah, the whole thing is screwy. I found my ticket so I guess I'll send it in with the "I'll fight this 'cause it's stupid" box checked and see what happens. I just don't want to get stuck with a revoked license and having to pay reinstatement fees on top of it all.

I remember about 2 years ago I got a parking ticket. Unfourtunately, it must have blown away in the wind so I never knew about it. No mail was received or anything.
One fine afternoon cruising in the RX-7, I get pulled over, arrested on warrent and hauled downtown to pay $52.
They then kicked me out on the street and told me 'Good Luck'. My car had to be 50 kms away, and with no cash to ride the bus, I was stranded.
Good ol' legal system. However, for the record, that was the only time I've ever had trouble with the law.

Alak you got lucky.
My friend Michel got a parking ticket a little over a year ago. Last month he was driving and they pulled him over for doing 101 in a 90 zone. They run his plate and find out that the parking ticket was more than a year old and there was a warrant out on it.
They gave him $450ish fine for driving with a suspended license (aparently your license gets immediately suspended when a ticket becomes a warrant), $50 for not having his updated address on his insurance, $50 for the same on his registration, $125ish for the speeding ticket, the original ticket was now a $200 warrant and they impounded his car for a minimum 30 days.
So he went and paid the warrant and the speeding ticket and paid to get his license back. We carpooled for a month, then he went to get his car back. Of course, for each day in the impound you have to pay impound fees, plus the fee to tow the car from where he was pulled over.
Add it all up, and a $25 parking ticket became over a thousand dollars of fines and fees, and 30 days without his car. Plus he was left standing where his car was taken and had to find other transportation. Luckily he had his cell and just called a cab, but cabs cost money too.
I didn't even think it was possible for all that to happen because I thought that they wouldn't let you renew your license if you had tickets.... So how did that ticket become more than a year old and turn into a warrant? I dunno...

In Ontario, I'm pretty sure you just have to repay them when you go to renew your plates, or you can't renew them, warrents for parking tickets seems a tad rediculous.

Yes they charge you when you renew the registration. I had to pay for a ticket my mom's got (car is in my name) when I re-registered last month. I now have 2 new parking tickets to pay for in less than one week. Did you know you can't park facing the wrong way on the side of the road, or park on any road, between 3am-5am even though it isn't posted ANYWHERE in the city. Neither did I, til now.
