All you young'ins are spoiled about what a "sports car" is. The original RX7 was a sports car, the MGB Coupes, Triumph Spitfires ect were sports cars. A true sports car is inexpensive, light weight, nimble and not overly powerful. The FRS is true to that formula. Cars like Mustangs, RX7 Twin Turbo's, Corvettes etc are not true to the sportscar formula.

I have a not-so-nimble spitfire sitting in my driveway & I learned stick on a stock 1.8L miata... some of us youngin's are more fortunate than others when it comes to automotive pasts.
Just don't expect this Toyoter to have the same electrical reliability as those older British racers since everyone knows the Brits are far superior electricians.

I agree with most that it's performance will be on par with the rx8 and that the rx8 was related to as a poor performer in a straight line. The difference as mentioned will be the price. I love the rx8 for a daily driver, and this car will deliver better fuel mileage which is a great thing. That will be the reasoning behind the difference in sales. Both cars have their enthusiasts, but the frs/brz will still come in as a reasonable daily driver.

I agree that we don't understand sports cars as they were back then, but the same arguments are still had. That 454 bbc malibu would probably beat that spitfire in a straight line, but not around the twisties. This arguement can still be had today, especially considering the new camry does 0-62 in under 6 seconds or something. We just expect much more out of our expensive sports cars. Back then you wanted the corvette to go faster in a straight line than the malibu and quicker around the twisties, which is where the mustang and genesis and camaro come in today, rather than the more expensive corvette. We've just come to expect much more out of our sports cars today, and keep those expectations regardless of price.

As far as moonroofs go, I agree with the women. I'm not a convertible guy, but I do like having a moonroof or targa top. I'm 6'4" and to be honest I can't have those things in my sports car, especially when I start tracking them. I also would forego luxury items like a radio, and a/c and p/s, and leather, and so forth in my sports cars, and prefer it like that. The vehicle that I drive on daily basis on the other hand, I want them to as many features as I see valuable, and the moonroof is a lovely feature to have. Knowing that the S5 doesn''t have a slide back roof, would prevent me from buying it in comparison to a 335xi coupe with moonroof.

Now, I wish it were easier to get cars without a sunroof/moonroof. The only well done one I've ever had is in my FC; it still cuts into headroom, like most (I'm 6'3", and with my helmet on, my head just touches the roof in my 7), but not as much, and unlike every other one I've had, it doesn't let in extra wind or outside noise even when closed - and I've owned a couple of Passats, VW's attempt at an entry luxury car - wonderful cars, but the sunroofs, like every other car I've had, have been noisy, rarely used items. In Calgary at least, in the 3 months of summer, it's either hot and sunny, and you don't want the sunroof open because you bake, or at night, it quickly cools due to the altitude and closeness to the mountains, and you don't want the cold night air gusting through the cockpit. That, and a sunroof is a hole in the roof, adding weight, and taking away structural rigidity (as it does to the otherwise notably strong structure of the FC).

Looks a great car, seems like a good car, smells like a good car.... Only way to judge is by driving it yourself :P I know this new crowd of people who think loud or "successor" cars are the best. But I believe that you can never fully recapture an "old school" customer as the reason they bought the Supra, Rx7, Ae86, Carolla gt-s, etc was because they liked that specific type of car, and pretty sure they did not expect for a newer rebranded model to appear as a so called "successor" For example: If a new 2013 Rx7 came out, I highly doubt that I would even consider it as all the ricer kids would ruin it, and im pretty sure Mazda will decide to put a piston motor or bootleg rotary motor and just kill it for everyone. Picture this forum overrun with little kids talking about straight pipes, fake BOV 's and other ricer like tings

Heh I am a "young'in" and love the old car design. 80's Toyota sports cars, RX7 FB/FC, and Lotus Esprit. Too bad it's all about speed now (even Lotus' new Esprit is super heavy with a ridiculous engine).

Just another car to look for on the road exhibiting bad driving habits and going too slow in the fast lane - it is a toyota.

I had to laugh, because I've noticed this about Toyotas too - often seem to be driven slowly by people blissfully unaware of traffic around them, or the rules of the road. I've attributed that to disengaged drivers choosing unengaging cars to drive. However, I seriously doubt the buyer demographic for these cars will be a typical Toyota demographic. Much like the old Supras, Celicas, MR2s, and AE86 and SR5 Corollas didn't/don't attract those "dead at the wheel" drivers that seem to be in so many Camrys and Venzas.

I cant disagree that Toyota owner exhibit some of the worst driving I have ever seen, the cars are very predictable to drive, they are quite and smooth. I also have learned thats what 95% of the drivers on the road want, not a car that informs them of what it is doing. The FRS is the 1st of a new generation of cars that will hopefully show that Toyota is once again capable of building cars with some driving dynamics and spirit...........most of all that is why it is being branded as a Scion in North America!

I'm glad I didn't leave you feeling slighted, Alan; I don't have anything against Toyota per se, or wish them ill as a company, they build very reliable , well engineered vehicles, generally well-suited to the task/niche they occupy - just without a much "soul" or sense of driver-car dynamics. And they used to build some very cool performance cars, so it's good they are trying to recapture some of that - and I hope the car sells well and vindicates their choice, as well as renewing interest in sports cars, not just big, sporty coupes/muscle cars like the Mustang and Hyundai Genesis.

For anyone interested Scion Canada is bringing a FRS here Monday May 7 from 6pm until 8:30pm. Unfortunately only those who have already bought or have a deposit on one will be able to drive it but all others are free to look, feel etc lol. Scion Canada will have a rep here to answer any questions etc.

There was a FRS making rounds of Calgary dealerships this week too - until apparently someone wrecked it out on a test drive!

Al, got any FRS in the showroom to see or for test drives? I am in the market to fill up the parking spot in my garage that once parked Rx-7s.
