S4 TII or S5 TII
Since 1987 TII are exempt from emmision testing,
would this be a valid reason for you to choose a 1987 TII over a 1989+ TII?
please post your opinions on this matter...
I am thinking it would be much better not worrying whether your ported turbo charged rotory motor does not need to go get its emission tested, but i am also a n00b. maybe it wont be that hard to clear emissions with such a motor!
please post!
thanks

Opening up a Big Can of Worms STEVE..LOL...depends on wether you think you will keep it stock ..with the 89 you will have to E-test ..the 87 I believe will only have one..then Finito!..(done)..I bought an 86 so I Bypassed the ****..(plannned it that way..no more E-Test..Woot!)..If you get the 87 you could always swap the 89 into it ..but you would be givin your wallet a "hit" once more..(like owning an Rx7 is Cheap..ya,right..).There are Lots of Options ..These are just a few....Gentlemen,please help out the new guy, Steve here..(by the way ,Welcome to Rotary ..my friend..Misterstyx69)

Depends on what you want and what you want to spend.
87 TII's will be emmissions exempt - but are getting pretty scarce.
88 TII's are basically the same - except aren't exempt.
S5 TII's are rare, expensive, and really damn nice. I love my S5 TII, it's such a nice car to drive.
FD's will never be exempt.

I love my S5 as well. It is a pain in the *** when e-test time comes around, but thats the price you pay for having the passion.
As far as the diff b/w S4 and S5, I think it is more cosmetic than anything else. Sure there is a little difference in power and some of the stuff under the hood, but for the most part (unless you want to be VERY critical) they will have similar performance.
Ultimatly if you are going to mod the car anything that would have made a mechanical difference b/w the 2 series will have been changed out for something better.
So as stated above, it really comes down to if your going to leave it stock or not because if you are modding it would definetly help to be emmission exempt.
Feel free to correct me on any of these points guys. Oh....welcome to the club!

The mentioned differences make up alot of the changes between S4 and S5....
as well the diffs changed from being a clutch type LSD (S4) to a viscous type for S5...as well the sway bar endlinks went from durable steel (S4) to cheapo platstic for S5...
and then little things like the S4 power window switches are worlds better in durability then the S5's....
But really it depends on what you like - if you LOVE S5's, buy one and bite the bullet on the Etest, otherwise get an S4...
But really - unless the car is heavily modified with zero emissions equipment - you shouldn't have any trouble passing with a good running car and a fresh cat.
welcome to the forum!
edit: pretty much (actually all) of the differences are covered in the FAQ for FC sticky thread at the top of the 2nd Gen Tech. Section - check it out...theres tonnes of good info!

it really doesn't matter. if you are that concerned about the e-test, go with an S4.
the only thing with the S5 is that it might be in better condition just because it is a few years newer.
in stock form, there are some engineered improvements with the S5, but because of cost-cutting a few bits got some cost-reduction done to them. brand new they were better than the S4 (other than possibly the diff...which no one really knows about the lock-up characteristic difference), but really you will not notice any difference other than the cosmetic bits.
