Registering a V8 RX7 ?
Does anyone in Canada (preferably in Ontario) have a V8 powered RX7; and could you post about how you went about registering and emissions testing it.
I am just doing some research to see what is involved.
Thanks.

what year is the 7?
pre '87 cars don't need etests, '87's won't as of january 1 next year.
You can have the car etested under a different kind of testing, it needs to pass minimum standards but they're pretty "minimum" It's called a "hot rod exemption"
As far as registration goes it should be pretty straighforeward. They don't care what engine is in it as far as giving you plates goes, as long as you have the car insured and etc.

The e-test is questionable, the Ministry keeps changing their mind on guidelines, so check with the shop when you go in. I went to crappy tire because they were the only ones who knew about the 'hot rod' class. 1) This 'hot rod' class turned out to be different from what I heard and they weren't going to test my car because they needed a letter from Mazda saying that they weren't making the OEM engine any more. I heard that all you needed was a letter from Mazda saying that the engine you put in the car isn't OEM. Any way, 'hot rod' class is N/A.
2) Test as 2001 Firebird with all emissions components. This was the next option the tech told me about and said he couldn't test because I didn't have EGR or air pump. CRAP
3) Kept the pressure on the desk and got them to phone the Ministry. After about 15 minutes on the phone with them, the manager told them to test as an RX7. WOOHOO.
Car tested, passed with flying colours, tech overheated the car to the point that the computer threw a code and shut down a few cylinders. Could have killed the ******. Turns out no harm done.
If the engine you are putting in is carbed, chances are you won't need any emissions crap anyway, so they can test it as whatever car the engine came from and chances are you'll pass.
Once you have the E-test, ownership and insurance (if you want cheap rates, you'll have to lie), registering the car is just like registering any other RX7.
Best thing to do is to take care of all of this before you pull the rotary.
The guidelines seem to be at the discretion of the shop owner since they are changing every month and no one can keep up, so talk to him/her and if they won't do anything for you, ask if they'll call the ministry, if that still doesn't help you, ask another shop.
PM me if you need a hand with anything else. Cheers.
Can't wait to go heads up with your new beast, Joe. Better have her done soon, before I do my heads/cam and bump her up to 410 at the wheels.
I just noticed, you joined in 2002 and all you have is 6 posts? Where ya been?

E-test
I live in Ottawa and I have a V8 FC
the car is an 88 but the engine is a 69
When I went in to get it E-tested I told them that is wasn't the origional engine and so they tested it as a hot rod wich was a very easy test to pass
I had true dual exhaust withought cats and no emissions equipement
the motor is a fully built up SBC 350 with a Holly 4barrel Carb that was pissing way more gas than it needed but I was in a hurry and didn't bother tunning it
apparently it passed with flying colours so if you talk to the guys at the shop they will know what to do
oh yeah I did have one slight problem they failed my gas cap so I had to buy a new one...
Good luck!
