Caledonia Native Protesting - Anyone?
I dunno if you guys have heard about this sheeeeat on the news or not but there are natives in Caledonia that have barracaded Argyle st. just before its merge with the Hwy. 6 bypass. They also have burned a number of old bridges on various concessions that lead into the reserve around Caledonia.
Now I don't know how familiar anyone is with this situation or whether anyone has actually witnessed any of the going's on.....but there is some messed up s*$t going on down here.
Just wondered if anyone else on the forum was close enough to the area to have seen any of the crazy crap that went on on monday - or any of the seemingly racial meetings that the towns people have on the front lines every night...

I honestly think they should take it to parliment - that is where the fight is, not against Caledonia townspeople - its between the natives and the gov't

Hey, way to be rasist *****. As a native american(non-status) I feel for them. If you knew what was going on, you wouldnt say that.
The situation is a company bought the land from the goverment, and wants to build a subdivision on thier ex-land.
Would you like the goverment selling your home? Its not like this was some empty field, IT was their HOMES.
Couldn't 99% of the land in this country be considered as their "Ex-land"? We're all screwed!!!! In all seriousness nobody wants another Ipperwash. The government is really trying to distance themselves from it all. The worst was when the Mayor put her foot in her mouth saying that it must be nice to have money come in automatically every month and not have to work for it. YOW...

My only problem with the native protest (which I do actually support) is that the natives are somewhat distancing themselves by acts like the tire burnings and such.
But really - those weren't even done by local natives - it was the american ones wearing the bandanas to shamefully hide their identity...

White man came and took it all away. It happened here, in south america, australia and many other places in the world.
Whenever a more advanced culture comes into contact with a native or more primitave culture they always get screwed.
I would be pissed to.

I'm not too familiar with this particular situation, but Natives in Canada have absolutely no reason to complain.
Did you know that the justice system officially recommends judges to consider alternative/softer sentences for Native offenders? How the hell is that fair?

Good point nik, its time natives were treated the same way as the rest of the population.
By providing them with an income and many other benifits they have become dependent on the government. Living on reserves with no way to suport themselves is not doing the majority of the native population any good.
Yes they were treated like total ****, but the current policies are not helping, in fact they are only making the problem worse.
Blocking rail roads and majors roads (ie: Stanley park bridge in Vancouver) are not going to win support from many people is just pisses them off.

'getting duped' presumes those natives who sold their land were all lacking in intelligence and sophistication to comprehend the value of what they were receiving vs. the value of what they were giving away.
In other words, to presume all transactions were one sided one must first presume natives are stupid - and obviously that's not the case.
Especially when one compares the prairie and eastern native bands to the prosperous salish bands on BC's west coast. The Cowichan band, for example, lease land to businesses like Wal-Mart, make a fortune off international sales of bent-wood boxes, cowichan sweaters, etc. They're wealthy, prosperous, and dignified.
In other words, to presume all transactions were one sided one must first presume natives are stupid - and obviously that's not the case.
