Quit Treating Your Car like it's Special!
Well,I got my car out of storage today.I had One tire to Pump up,and I installed the battery.I checked all the fluids before I started it up.I got in and turned the Key.............Bam!..Started up!..Now,the only thing that I can say is I have been sitting here for 5 months,reading,Reading,READING!..You know What?..All this Whining about you HAVE TO do this and that OR ELSE...Guess What?I didn't!..and My Car Did Not Blow up!..No,I am not Lucky..I am Canadian!(beer joke!)..just haven't done everything that is Posted on the Forum, and regretted it later!..So,If you have an Rx7 ..Drive the CRAP out of it..That is MY GOAL for the Summer. One thing I am not going to Do Is.. Treat it Like it's Special!..I bought it to Drive, and Dammit!,I'm gonna Squeeze every Nickel Invested into that Car,Out of it When I do drive it!..Ah..Now I feel better!..Have great Summer Guys!..mine is Just Beginning!..Hurry up!,Only Six More Months Til Storage!..Cheers.STYX!~
i will be driving right alongside with u Mistery........sure i love my car......but i bought it so i can drive it.....and if she blows up again........i will fix it again.....peace
I'm not Canadian but I could not agree more, I have never had problems with 7 and 8k shifts, hittin second gear scratches as often as possible. My cars run better than other peoples that baby theirs, they are sports cars, if you wanna putt around get a boring *** SUV
I have found over the last few years that my driving habits have mellowed significantly.
I still drive pretty fast, and do crazy stuff, but much less crazy, and my cars see redline far less often.
last winter, as every winter, however, the cars did get stored properly. I don't think it's something that MUST be done, but it's something I do regardless.. Only takes an hour and the car is that much better in the spring.
I suppose it takes 2-3 hours in the spring but it's fun and the reward is well worth it.

wheny ou start working with alot of engines and taking them apart you will see the difference that can happen with proper storage and not.
I am nto goign to say it will explode when turning the key.. BUT why for the sake of $20-30 woudl you bother possibly damagin your engine?
Not like it is a huge list anyway...
1. check coolant strength
2. fuel stabilizer
3. fogging oil
4. done

In the same sense, every RX-7 I have purchased has required significant work to correct improper storage. Replacement fuel pumps, injector cleanings, seized brakes, etc.
I bypass having to store it by simply working on the car year round
I'll be out and about in it very shortly (mid-week next week is fire up time) and getting some much needed return from a large investment of bread, blood and curse words
And I don't expect any light throttle driveability issues from the porting.......since.........there will be no light throttle driving lol

I'm going to be driving my car somewhat nicely at first since I do have to drive it home frmo Vancouver. But once its around home and its passed the OOP it won't see very many light driving days.
I haven't taken my car over 7k since getting a new engine. I've got all rx-8 moving parts now, plus balancing and clearancing, but I'm still to nervous to try an rx-8 redline of 9k.
Other than that, now that the break-in period is over, it just laps up all the abuse I give it.

Oh..I meant to mention..Like every "other' car I have had to store.Of course you take the Preventive Measures..fuel,Coolant,Etc..MY start-up was to see if I "knew the car" as well as I thought I did..And I DO!..I Knew it would start up first crank!..So,In Doing that,It tells me the Internals are good, the injectors are Fine, and the Darn engine will give me another Summer!~..Now I could have stood there and Fogged the engine, waiting to let the oil Lubricate the Internals,But I frankly didn't Have the Time, with the storage Guy on the cell phone,Yakkin that he Would be there,as soon as he could(I WAS holding him up from leavin!)..So Instead of standing in the Middle of nowhere .I gave it a shot!.and It worked!..
my car will be out and about soon enough, see what happens when i dont have a garage and am forced to use a useless tarp? i now have to replace my floor, caz my passengers are falling through. DAMN YOU MR WINTER. . .sir.
Styx (and everyone else):
Don't be fooled by the NA's robustness. An NA rotary tolerates a lot more BS than a turbo. Plus some people (IAN) get gun shy after their 6th or 12th engine.

Ah, Ian just likes hearing himself talk. :p
Turbos suck, everything is so much more touchy than a N/A, but a proper N/A will cost the same as a Lower HP turbo.

There's nothing to be gained from being lazy when storing your car.. and nothing to be lost from babying it a little so that you can drive it for many years to come.
Don't worry, I do DRIVE it... but you have to have some respect for your vehicle, at least a vehicle that I've invested so much time, money and effort into restoring, and shaping to match my ideal 7.
Go head Mistery, drive the shyte out of yours, 'tis your choice.

I do store mine carefully in the winter - then I maximize the summer with as much track time as possible, lots of running the car to 8000. Don't want those 6-ports to seize from disuse
Rotary can take alot of non good taking care of. But I personally think that all the easy steps at the end will pay off.
That grounding very small job but boring, car doesntttt need but worth doing = happy car
Good storage + car doesnt neeed it , but driving wit that extra 10 psi in each housing is worth.
Changing oil ever 3-5 k = lots of happy rev days but car will still run if you change it every 15 k
etc etc.
Yes once added its lots of work , But if your not willing to do it or pay for it to be done. Then the " rotarys suck " will be heard , instead of the damn that small engine rocks !!

I had a 1980 RX-7 with about 150,000kms. Over the course of 2 years I beat 50,000kms into that thing. I was unbelivably hard on that car. It came with exhaust and KN filter when I bought it. The only thing I had to replace was the Alternator and battery after my first winter with RX-7's.
I also have a friend that put 5 years (unknown milage) of Racing abuse (Street Racing, Track Racing, Drag Racing) Nothin but racing on his 85 Supercharged 12A. Being a year round driver, one cold winter morning the motor finally spit a seal. If I had to guess, there had to be like 200,000kms on that engine. No joke. He spent double his rent in fuel per month.
Both cars had regular maintenance and fluid changes.
Just goes to show these engines arnt as 'fragile' after all.

i too am a perpetrator of much rotary abuse... and i will testify to the durability an forginveness of the 13b n/a. before i knew jack about rotaries id had the coolant hose runnin off the block by the plugs pop off 5 times draining my coolant system (mind u it never hit the verheating line) without killin my water jackets.. ive peeled off emissions control and tore all the manifolds off because someone forgot to cap the plugs for the turbo on my housings (turbo housings) and was losing a litre of coolant / half hour that way for a couple weeks, i watched one fo the lil "diffusers" under the injector disappear into the combustioin chamber and presumably go flyin out the exhaust on startup... ive seen most of the things that people say kill 7s happen to mine (mainly out of pure ignorance) and all i have ever done is drove it like it was stolen an the hounds of hell were on my ***.
my cars response....
"is that all bitch???!"
in the battle of wankle vs ******.. wankle has won
