So I bought a car in October and put it straight into storage so I could get it ready for spring when I could take it for a safety and such. But now that I'm going to register the car I realize the seller didn't give me a UVIP. If I remember correctly, I can just pay $25 and get one on the spot at the DMV when I go to register? It's been a while since I've registered a car.....Also, I think I remember having to show an appraisal paper for tax purposes due to the age of the car? It's a 1985.
yup, you can buy the uvip on the spot just make sure you have the appraisal papers and the signed ownership to put the car into your name, for a temp you need the safety and for full sticker you will also need insurance.

You can get the UVIP ..BUT you can't get the vehicle registered into your name without an appraisal certificate.
the reason being is that they do not know what to charge you for tax.
somehow get a safety, show insurance, then transfer ownership and get plates at the same time..and Done.

If the car is still in the old owners name with a fit permit you can get a temp(10day) with proof ofvalid insurance, bill of sale and an appraisal, They will put it in your name and get you a plate with a T stickerafter you pay taxes on the higher of the values. If the old ownership is unfit then you have to tow it to get the safety .
Since when did it come into effect that you "have to get an appraisal"? Years ago you only paid tax on the "paid" amount of a hand written receipt. When they removed that ability they gave two choices.
1. you pay black book market value
2. you get an appraisal done (most MTO garages charge $50.00 for this)
The only reason to get an appraisal was to hope the value would be shown as less then black book in order to pay less tax (don't forget to take the fee into account), But your car can appraise for more as well!
Now I have been out of ON for a couple years and things do change, So are you saying appraisal is the "only" option now?

This appraisal business is new to me too, I've bought the uvip on the spot before, and then just told them verbally how much I paid, then I paid the tax on the greater of what I paid and the black book value.

It's been a while since I used a UVIP (5 years?) but I didn't need to get an appraisal, and also the blue book value on the car was so low (1984 GSL-SE) that I didn't need to pay taxes. It was actually very straight forward. Get UVIP, fill out stuff, have prior owner sign ownership, transfer to my name.
A UVIP isn't even necessary. When I bought the Cosmo, they just signed the ownership into my name and I made the transfer at the ministry.
