Ownership transfer appraisal?!? wtf

Has anyone transferred ownership for an FB lately?

I picked up my two project cars (’83 and ’85) last fall but only this week I decided to transfer the ownership. I had a bill of sale, the signed ownerships and the (useless) used car package but the babe at the desk said I needed an appraisal for both of them!

WTF?

So I guess I’m looking for some input on what I should do.

Both cars are currently non-running. The ’83 will eventually be plated. The ’85 will be given to the junkyard after I strip it down (the frame is rusted all to ****).

So what I was thinking I’d do is: strip down the ’85 and call the junkyard to come and pick it up and simply hand them the old ownership (I’m assuming they’ll want the ownership in order to remove the car) – thus saving me from (a) paying the tax (b) paying the appraisal fee. Then I’d just wait until the ’83 was ready for the road, and then get the safety, appraisal and ownership done all at once.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I know I was suppose to transfer the ownership within 14 days or so....but from what I've read that doesn't seem to be a big deal - even after a year or two.

I’ve included some pics just for the hell of it.

Go to A Buddy who is a Car dealer.Since he has a Dealer Licence He will write you an Appraisal For your Car.If you don't know anyone That Has a Dealers Licence then you could Go to Any REAL car dealer.(they will charge you though..Roughly 50 bucks and Up..Your Buddy may nOt!)With that Appraisal in Hand you take it to the MTO along with the Ownership and the Bill of sale,Safety,Insurance and BINGO!.You are On the road!.Oh..sometimes it's better to get a Low appraisal For Insurance Purposes.( I think later on you get another Higher appraisal,But Your Insurance will stay Low,No Payment Hike..But I could Be wrong)

the pst SUX I am sure happy that alberta doesn't have that crap to deal with!

if it were me I wouldn't bother doing the transfer unless you are going to drive them.
other wise the bill of sale = proof enough that they are yours.

I had a law professor once that said "you really don't need to know the law,
just do what you like and you will be told what the laws evenitally

That within 15 days is more important than you think...

Try another MTO office, maybe with a recent receipt, wink, wink.

I talked to our license office yesterday and I dont when the policy came in but as of now in Ontario, anything over 20 years old must have an appraisel. If you in Toronto, and have proper documentation, I can do the appraisels for you. BTW, do not wait to transfer ownerships if you are either the BUYER or SELLER. I have an aquaintence who waited 6 months and spent money on the car to fix it up, now the MTO wants a bill of sale and he cant find the seller anymore. Make sure you do get a proper lien search and history of the car BEFORE you buy it etc etc.

yeah, transfer ownerships quickly.

This new law sounds stupid to me.

Appraisals are generally around $20-$30 so it's not that big of a deal though.

I think you're on the right track with your idea - strip the 85 and send it to scrap, they won't care who's name it's in. Get the '83 appraised now as it should be pretty close to worthless if it doesn't run - you'll probably get an appraisal for $100 or $0.

that '83 looks pretty clean aside from the bin rot. I put whole new fenderwells in my '83 last fall - you can find the pics in the 1st gen section if you search for "bin rust" with my name.

How bad is the GSL-SE? If it's wheelwheels are cleaner it may be the better car to save.

What is considered to be a valid 'bill of sale'? All I have is a tiny piece of paper with the price for BOTH cars (I bought two at the same time) and his signature.

What will the MTO say about that?

Great - I'll take a look. Unfortunately the GSL-SE's underbody is completely rotten. I'm transplanting everything else into the '83.

Ownership Transfer & Appraisal

I was told by an MTO staffer that if you're working on a vehicle and not planning to put it on the road immediately, then completing the transfer within 6 days doesn't matter.

As for the appraisal, some MTO offices ask for them, some do not. Try a licensing office in a smaller town. They are more relaxed about the regulations.

Good luck!
