I had a similar problem with my car... if i let it sit idle and warm up.. it would overheat.

However, once I started driving the temp would return to normal... (actually it would return just under the halfway point)

Anyway, it turned out to be a bad fan clutch and replacing it with a newer one fixed my problem.


Try replacing that before you start spending too much.

 

Thanks Wankeled...the fan clutch is good....when you start the motor you hear the "woosh" (lol...) sound has the afan clutch engages..

Any one in Ottawa have a good 1st gen rad for sale ???
