Our tuning week-end with Steve Kan
Hello guys,
The Québec RX Club had it's greatest meet to date last week-end.
Steve Kan was over to tune our cars. 5 of our members got tuned.
My experience:
Got my midpipe friday afternoon, got back from work around 6pm and figured a 1 or 2 hour job. Big mistake. Even my (electric) impact and shooting tons of release all wouldn't suffice to take off the cat. I gave up after 3 and a half hours. Next morning, I went to a close-by shop that take care of those issues for me. 40$ later, my midpipe is installed metal on metal with sillicone in between because the midpie didn't come with gaskets.
I then leave for the rendez-vous point (at this point I'm 4 hours late) only to arrive there and find out Steve's flight was delayed and he missed to connection in Dallas (and he's scheduled to arrive only in about 2 hours). People there were already working on their cars, we also grabbed something to eat, then Steve arrived.
Steve his a living RX-7 encyclopedia. As soon as he got on my case, I explained him the problem I had with my boost. Simply with this description, he figured out right away what it was, told me to take the pressure chamber off, and there it was, 2 solenoid connectors were inversed.
I went to try it and it boosted about 8 psi. I was already happy because my car was boosting much more and also the 2nd turbo was kicking in.
After holding on the throttle for a while, I heard a big woooosh and lot all boost. My car wouldn't boost at all.
I made it back to the shop and had mixed feelings obviously. Put it didn't take much more than 2 minutes to find out that the y-pipe coupler was busted (and I mean BUSTED). I replaced the coupler thanks to J-P and went for another try.
WOOOO! 10 pounds of boost!
Then, nothing. Lost all boost AGAIN.
Got back to the shop. About 3 minutes later, found a hose that was loose. Diagnosis: my hoses are cheap, and I need to replace them ALL.
Thanks to Alex (puma) who had some good hoses in stock and sold me the amount I needed, I could do the whole hose job again. Needless to say my whole sunday was basically dedicated to the hose job. Removing the manifold, rats nest/solenoid rack and so on, machining a block off plate(thanks Israel) for the ACV, pure joy. With the help of Alex and Steve, the car was ready by days end.
I was the last one to car tuned. At around 10:30 pm on sunday night after 2 18 hour days.
Result:
Steve estimates my read wheels HP @ 330!!!
I'm boosting 13.5 !
Steve thought my engine was low mileage/street ported. I was stunned to hear it had 60 000 miles and was purely stock. Myengine and turbos are 12 years old just like the car.
I'm running 94% engine duty.
For those who don't know, my mods are:
air intake
3"downpipe
3" midpipe
2 and half " cat-back
centerforce dual friction clutch (which Steve told me is a pretty bad choice )o
Everything else is STOCK, except for some non performance mods like Falken Tire, Hawk HP+ pads, hood pins on the hood. That's all.
I can't even beleive how fast my car is! It's just CRAZY!
I'm really in RX Heaven since sunday!
What an awesome week-end, all 5 of us at some point at to do at least a partial engine bay teardown, 3 of us had problems with injectors, one had what is thought to be wrapped apex seals, another had a problem with the wastegate.
In the end though, everyone is satisfied and after all parts can be replaced but such an experience is priceless

Sounds like you had your hands full WHO!
Good to hear you're boosting again... and boosting hard too! 13.5lbs?!?! Isn't that a bit dangerous without an upgraded ECU???
It's funny how everyone has mechanical problems on the day they're going to get tuned! lol
Can't wait to see that blue FD of yours again! Now get out there and drive!!!

Plus I have no beater right now since my POS has died on me, so I gotta use the FD for now... it's great to have it tuned perfectly although I usually run only 11 pounds of boost and change it for 13.5 when some idiot in a corvette wants to show off
Of course, now I gotta go put gas in it after about 200 kms of driving (including the tuning session WOT after WOT after WOT....)
