Opinion please price of 1986

Hi everybody...I need your opinion...
I went to see an 1986 Rx-7...the car is 100% solid...floors etc...the paint is very good as well..if a paint job was neeed she would only need a sanding no rust at all. The car has only 125,000 km...runs very good was never winter driven...
It's not turbo...

The guy wants $4,250 for it and won't budge...what do you guy's think...

regards

Pete

i paid 1250 for my 86 base, with 335k on it less then 100k on the rebuild, by mazdees. 4250 seems a little high, but we need more info. is it base? GXL. the going rate in your are could be different then mine, or other peoples ask a local guy for info.

Sounds like a good daily driver if thats what you're looking for. Is the engine bay clean? How bout the weather stripping, does all the electronics work? Interior condition? Service records? Accidents? Check all that. If it passes with flying colours $4250 would not be bad for an absolutely flawless 86 base. Try offering him $4000 in cash. Money talks and if you have it right there he'll probably cave in.

The body sounds like it needs a good buffing or wet sand (paint fade?) If thats the case I would bring in a body guy to see what it exactly needs.

Good luck.

You can easily install power windows yourself.

If there aren't any serious deficiencies that he's hiding from you, I'd say he's asking a fair price. The condition of the body and of the engine are your two major considerations, and it sounds like they're both very good.

If you can afford it and you want a ride that's as clean as this one sounds, I'd say ****** it up. A cancer-free s4 is not a common find...

i got my 86 GXL for $1000

has a bit of rust, nothing major, nothing some sanding can fix... and it needed a battery, O2 sensor, and mufflers...

it had a new engine with 38,xxxKM on it, and 232,xxxKM (actually 232323, lol what a number) on the chassis, it definately isn't immaculate, but it isn't bad, and some TLC can bring it back into good/great condition... so i'm just letting u know how much i paid for my GXL, (highest trim available for that year) so that u can go from there...

EDIT: oh yeah, it also came with 2 extra stock rims w/ tires, 2 headlight motors, 1 extra sunroof motor, and the old alternator (incase i want to get it rebuilt) (new one was put in last year) and everything on the car works fine (knock on wood)...

While I agree with Amour_, am also willing to spend a little more than others for a clean car, and I know that this is Ottawa, and prices are a little higher, I would not pay that much for a 86 GX.

For a 89-91 FC, then maybe. Or a fully loaded GXL.

But, I can't see the car. Maybe it is really nice and it is worth it...

As eViL said, in the Ottawa Area, the prices seem to be higher than elsewhere.

Most people will post here and say that they paid less than $2K for their '86 - but they'll always forget to mention or downplay all the problems that they had. People never take into account how much money they have put into a car since purchase, or how much money they would need to put into it to make it perfect. Just because you don't mind the fact that the shocks are worn, or that the door is rusty doesn't mean that the value of the car doesn't go down.

Personally I'd rather pay top dollar for a true, honest, RUST FREE example of a car than one that needs paint and body work but has rims and new brakes/engine.

When you are looking at cars like this, the prices will vary wildly. Blue book values mean nothing, so there is no easy answer to your question. It's not always "What is the car worth" as much as it is "What is the car worth to you?" I have an '86 GXL, and I'd never sell it for $4000. That doesn't mean it's worth more - it just means it's worth more to me.

The real question is: Have you looked at any other FC's? If not, you may want to. If so, how does this one rate compared to them?

Yeah that's true Nick...you know it seems so hard to get a second gen in very good condition....they rare it seems .. specially around here.
There's an 1986 in Aylmer I can get for $1000 or $1,200 but the car was badly taken cared of...wouldn't even pay $500.00 for it...real piece of "S%it"
Anyway this guy won't lower the price at all...he says he brought down from $5,000 to $4,250 already..
Theres one I'm interested in Belleville...but that's far..I might have to go there just to check it out...

I was living in Montreal when looking for my 7. After some searching, I decided that Toronto was my best bet. I went on 3 different weekends before I found mine. Going far isn't always a bad thing....

Those who paid a grand or less probably scooped them from 'fire sales.' Like the kid who just posted his f/s 7 in London. $500 for a car w/ 40k rebuild - car must go. He probably could have gotten $1k for the motor alone if he'd tried...

When my 86 GXL was snuffed 5 or so years ago, the insurance payout was $3500, to the dime. This was with no consideration for underbody rust or anything else. The adjuster thought it was stock, the paint was clean and they wrote the cheque.

I don't know what a clean FC would go for around here, let alone the Ontario market, but I do know its hard to find a car less than $2500 that would pass a basic insurance inspection in Calgary, let alone be something you're not embarrassed to park in front of your own house. Something to keep in mind is that a typical example of any car more than 8-10 years old is probably near the end of its reliable life - and so average market values reflect that fact. So with older vehicles, it really comes down to the condition/mileage on the vehicle. If the car is truly well maintained and low km's, then it no longer makes sense to compare it to typical vehicles of that age. All of which is to say that its hard to determine if the price is good. I wouldn't be pulled off by what I consider outliers, either - extreme good deals - sure they're out there, for people lucky enough to be at the right place and time, and find someone who doesn't know or care what their older car is worth - but you can wait a long time to come across one yourself.
For what its worth, I paid $9000 for my '91 GXL 7years ago - 74k kms, well equiped, never winter driven. At the time, that was a pretty good price - I looked at cars with lower equipment levels and higher mileage that weren't willing to go under 10,000. It was still on the original, well worn RE71 rubber, and needed mufflers, but no other work, and looked mint. And at 103k km's, it still runs great, still never winter driven, and no rust at all anywhere - so I wouldn't take less than $5000 for it - I don't know if I would get that if I was trying to sell - but I wouldn't sell for less.

that is a fair price.
i paid $4400 for my 89 base, bought here in Ottawa last summer. everything on it was working, even the stock radio still worked perfect, sunroof worked perfect. paint was good and so was body, but not showroom quality at all. it also had 185k and a rebuilt engine.

so i think 125k for an 86 is low and that price is quite reasonable if everything is mostly original on it.
just make sure you don't make a rushed decision and really go over the car properly.

I think this is an interesting thread. Totally agree that a car is only worth what someone is willing to spend for it. For these machines, particularly ones that are special, i.e. low mileage, never winter driven, original owner...they come up once in a while and are difficult to price. In my case, last year I was offered $10K for my '87 mint 7 with only 64K on the clock, never winter driven, absolutely not a mark on it. But I'd never sell it for that. Was it a good price? Sure it was, but to me my 7 is worth more - and I doubt it would be worth even $5K to a normal RX-7 enthusiast. Someone will get the 7 when I kick off I guess, but until that time, I will enjoy driving a machine that STILL turns more heads than exotic iron costing $60K and more...
