New engine rebuild question

3rd gen RX7 questions....

I have heard when you get a fresh rebuild that there is a break in time. I think its around 1000km and you want to stay off the boost during this time. I have also heard that the car can run poorly for the first 100km or so till it gets more compression.

Can anyone explain the above in greater details and also any other safety precautions I should do?

the break in period can vary from builder to builder. they are the ones performing the build and possibly providing a warranty. so go with what they tell you as far as break in instructions.

I have never heard of a car running poorly for the first 100kms. but compression #s can improve as the seals and engine components wear/form/seat to each other.

Makes sense, and I agree. Any other suggestions that if it was your car you might do?

they may smoke for a bit, probably the first tank of gas.

I did hear a rumor of corvette motors that if you race them right off the show room floor they brake in and will produce more HP stock, then the average corvette.

You shouldn't completely stay off boost. You should give it a little bit like 5 PSi every once in a while to give the seals a different type of load. Keep the RPM's low and bring them up as you get more mileage on the engine. Also, try to avoid the highways as thats not really doing anything to break in your engine, country roads with elevation are best.

Of course you should always listen to your engine builder on your break in procedure.

Heres what i do.
break it in by varying the engine speed (rpm).
downshift and upshift as much as possible.
light boost is fine.
keep engine speed under 5000rpm as much as possible
change oil after 1000kms, then your good to go.

Great advice guys thanks. Anyone know of some nice scenic hills in the Kitchener/Waterloo area? It sounds like I have a valid excuse to go for a drive without the wife and kids

Don't forget to follow your clutch's recommended break-in period. (it's usually is more than the engine break-in)

I haven't found too many. -> Riverbank & Hidden Valley.

My breakin recommendations generally consist of 500KM of easy driving, then after that beat the **** out of it. On the first startup, it is beneficial to run the engine at 2K for about 10 minutes just to bed in the seals. That eliminates most of the starting issues you can see with new seals and worn rotor housings.
