New 450HP 3rotor mid-engine Mazda Furai concept car.

Inspired by the fact that, on any given weekend, there are more Mazdas and Mazda-powered cars road-raced in the United States than any other brand, the Mazda Furai is the sort of car that could only come from a company that incorporates the “Soul of a Sports Car” into everything it builds, but with an eye toward the future and the environment through the use of ethanol (E100) produced by British Petroleum (BP).
Furai takes Mazda’s unique Nagare (Japanese for “flow”) design language a step further as it is translated into a concept car based on an American Le Mans Series (ALMS) racing car. The car utilizes the Courage C65 chassis the company campaigned in the ALMS series only two seasons ago, and the 450-hp three-rotor rotary engine that distinguishes it from anything else on the track.
Says Franz von Holzhausen, Mazda’s North American director of design, “Furai purposely blurs boundaries that have traditionally distinguished street cars from track cars. Historically, there has been a gap between single-purpose racecars and street-legal models — commonly called supercars — that emulate the real racers on the road. Furai bridges that gap like no car has ever done before.”
Mazda’s critically acclaimed Nagare design language describes the flow of water, air, people or things moving in one direction. Mazda Nagare is flow, with an insightful and spirited styling, which, in Mazda Furai, invokes a raw, unfettered desire to possess everything this car represents.

The 2010 RX-8 will also make it's debut.

Build it!! (even if I'd probably never be able to afford it!) I bet this steals the show at Detroit. Hopefully I can drool over it at the next Seven Stock!!!

Man I hope this thing is in Gran Turismo 5.

I just came 9 times. My pants are permanently ruined.

Seriously though, I am glad to see mazda design something of a real world rotary powered car. I can appreciate the design studies of far out concepts, but I love when they make something we could see in the future i.e. the kabura. This already looks drool worthy.

Now that's a halo car if I ever saw one. I never expected Mazda to make something like this, even as a concept.

Yes! The answer to our prayers, not a NEW RX7, but a completely new car that carries only the fighting spirit of the FD on the track. I can't think of a better place to test it either.

^ Then there will never be another RX-7.

I think they shouldn't call it an RX-7 because none of the previous RX-7s were mid-engine. Plus, it would probably be priced way out of the range of even the FD. I like the name "RX-1" for it for some reason.

Probably will never become a street car but I hope it does.
We need a 80 thousand dollar Rotary powered supercar to fight the new GTR that's comming out.

Mazda recently expanded their testing track and they'll be doing MORE towards safety at high speeds and how to improve handling so you know it will handle better than an RX-8.

Guys, it's been stated that the Furai is based on the 2005 Courage 3-rotor chassis, so there's absolutely nothing on that car that's remotely intended for production. They're testing the waters to see what folks think, but it's got nothing to do with the next car.

"the fighting spirit of the FD " ... I think there was a bigger chance that the 3-rotor was going in the FC

*fixed*

Mazda Rotary SuperCar concept the Furai

Next month will see the unveiling of yet another Mazda design study in the form of the new Furai Concept, destined to debut at the Detroit Auto Show. In addition to the Furai, Mazda will also take the wraps off the facelifted RX-8 four-door sports coupe as well as the recently revealed Mazda Taiki Concept, a preview of the carmaker’s future sports car.

The new Furai is the latest iteration of Mazda’s unique Nagare (Japanese for “flow”) design language, taking it a step further as it is a concept car based on an American Le Mans Series (ALMS) racer. The concept utilizes the Courage C65 chassis the carmaker campaigned in the ALMS series two seasons ago, and is powered by the same 450hp three-rotor rotary engine as the race car.

Mazda’s own North American director of design, Franz von Holzhausen, goes so far as to describe the Furai as being a Mazda supercar. “Furai purposely blurs boundaries that have traditionally distinguished street cars from track cars. Historically, there has been a gap between single-purpose racecars and street-legal models - commonly called supercars - that emulate the real racers on the road. Furai bridges that gap like no car has ever done before.”

Officials are yet to release any details on the updated RX-8 but several prototypes have been spotted by spy photographers in recent weeks. The car keeps the same basic shape but gets new front and rear bumpers and lights, and is also rumored to be powered by a more powerful rotary engine.

I like the 787B-esque paint. But hate the Taiki style fenders.
