My new girl, and she's an immigrant!

Ehhh Canada

I recently picked up my first FD! Its my first RX7, mazda, and turbo'd car as well so I thought I'd make an official hello thread. Can you say n00b?

The boring stuff (About me): First name.. Well, some of us prefer aliases lol. I'm young.. probably younger than a lot of members here, just a few deep in the 20's. I love cars. I love technology. I love girls. Add all 3 together, and you have an entire cult culture. I am an underground miner, blow stuff up, get dirty, work in the dark, get payed well. I love my job. Well enough of this lol, keep reading and lets get to the good stuff.

Why the RX7? Ever since I was like 10 and I first heard of the legendary RX7 FD I knew it was THE car I had to have someday, even if by some chance its styling had become extremely outdated, its weight ratio a standard among all cars, and the uniqueness of a rotary engine was commonplace. Luckily, even 20 years after being manufactured, it still holds its own in these categories and many many more. But being 10, I just liked the name. R-X-7. And of course the pop up lights were pretty fascinating

My new never ending project: The reason I titled the thread as I did, is because I imported my new toy from the US. A much milder, less car rotting, no need for salt on the roads 4+ months of the year type of climate. This should equal a happier car. That, and I was able to get it cheaper in the model and colour I wanted for the title alone, plus importing a car was something that I don't know of any else doing in my circle of friends. I like to live outside the box, can you tell? My goal for my FD is tried and true however, without a deep wallet and many available parts/cars/engines I plan on keeping my build on the safe side and of course doing a build thread to go along with it. GT35xx variant and ALL of the supporting mods to make a fairly reliable, 375-425whp. Streetable, fast, good looking, and able to back itself up.

So without making the worlds biggest wall of text the next 8th wonder of the world.. I present my newest addition to the family as she sits now: My 93 R1 BLACK ON BLACK!

Yes the hood sits flush, I took this seconds after getting it home and looking under the hood. Yes, the gorgeous CCW's were parted out before I could save her.

Congrats on the nice seven! Just remember you are now doomed. I obtained my first RX-7 (FC) having just turned 21. Now I'm spoiled for life as nearly every other car I've driven or owned since feels like doesn't handle properly.

Flash: I never thought of things like that before, but its very true. I knew this fact; just never fully understood it until just now. Thanks!

BTW, I also got my first 7 at 21; I am on my 3rd now.

Lol agreed. I took a read over it, glad to see the Canadian forum is light hearted and welcoming. On a side note.. just completed the safety! Everything was pretty much good to go or easily fixed, except..... the rear toe link bushings have some play. Replace with aftermarket toe links? Replace just the bearings? Suggestions anyone? The car is being babied for now. No drift/autox/extreme driving .... yet.

Looks very nice, I remember seeing the for sale thread.

Toe links are pretty easy to find. You could pick up used or here are two options

If you don't mind how did the border/customs work, and how much was shipping?

What advice would you give to someone looking to purchase a 7 from the states

I decided not to use a broker, and do the entire process myself - towing it, exporting etc. US Customs require you to submit the vehicles title and bill of sale at least a full 72 hours ahead of the time you will be exporting the vehicle, not including weekends. At the border, everything was amazingly smooth. The US side checked over my paper work (The cars title, bill of sale, and a list of my personal information I had sent them stating who I was, where I lived, what vehicle I was exporting and I when I expected to drive to drive across so they had time to check the vehicle for liens and that it wasn't stolen etc) an officer? came out, checked that the vin number was correct, admired the car, told me stories about his wife's 2nd gen, stamped the title for export and I drove it to our side to deal with customs. Oh I towed the vehicle myself to avoid the hassle of out of country insurance on a newly owned vehicle as well.

At the Canadian side I declared I was importing a vehicle, they asked about the uhaul trailer I had picked up while in the states for a one way haul to home, wrote me a yellow slip and asked me to pull in and bring in all the paperwork. I presented the stamped for export title, the bill of sale, the paperwork for the trailer, paid 8% duty for a Japanese vehicle, and filled out the import slip. I can't remember the exact name of it, its very important for getting your vehicle registered in your province though. They didn't inspect or even come outside and look at the vehicle while it sat outside the customs office. The whole process took 25 minutes at most as it didn't need any of the RIV crap, manufacturers recall clearance letter etc being 15+ years old.

As far as advice, I may write up a much more detailed guide to be stickied. But off the top of my head, even though my bill of sale was notarized, they recommended that an original copy of the for sale ad be brought in as well. The seller is going to have to have some patience in sending you documents such as the title and bill of sale, and realize it does take a little bit of work on your end to get the car out of the country. I posted and messaged a admin/mod stating I was purchasing the car with a link to the thread as well, and stated in the thread I was purchasing the vehicle for sure .. just small things to help cover myself. I chose to buy a car and deal with a reputable member on here that has 5000+ posts, I didn't even fly down to look at the vehicle - a little crazy, but everything has been 100% he said it was. And finally, being polite, patient, and having all of the required documents neatly held together in one folder helps. Thanks for the interest so far everyone.

Some of this may be jumbled as I was on the phone, but I hope it helps!

Queues up Led Zepplin's "The Immigrant Song"

Quite a beauty you have there. Welcome to the club, and to the wonderful world of rotary ownership (with all the joy and sorrow that come with it).

Cheers,

Jon
