Maybe moving to canada, smog question!

Ive been debating on moving to ontario or not... one question i have is, what are the smog rules there, and what are rules on aftermarket parts on vehicles... the biggest in question would be a tuned R32 GTR.

You will have to e-test the car to put it on the road and then e-test it every two years after that.

There are many R32s on the road here but those were imported directly into Canada from Japan. You would have to inquire about how to register a car that was initially imported in to the US and now being imported in to Canada. I think your vehicle maybe be determined to be a "grey market" vehicle making it tougher to import but ask the appropriate authorities and they will provide you with a conclusive answer.

well the R32 i will be purchasing is located in canada at the moment, it is a friend who lives there, he just bought a house and the owners sold him two cars with it an R32 and a TII RX7. The R32 was never registered i guess. but it came from japan to cananda very recently.

So this shouldnt be a problem registering this car in canada though?

If the car was never registered it may acutally be quite a big problem if it dosn't have a Canadian ownership yet. (not sure about other provinces but I know about Ontario). If the car is being sold with just the import papers it will be very difficult.
Your friend should have the owner register the car in their name first so that the car has a canadian ownership in the person you are getting it from's name. then sell it to you with a bill of sale, etc. that way it will be very easy to register in your name at any minstry.

Without having that done it will be next to impossible as they specifically check the documents to make sure that the person getting the ownership was the person who imported the car. I know because the ministry I have had all my cars registered at started checking my documents for this last time I went.

I don't know anything about getting the car registered, but I do know that it depends where you are moving to in Ontario if your vehicle needs to be e-tested. I believe anywhere north of and including Bruce County you don't have to get your car e-tested. I live in Bruce County and we don't have any kind of emissions testing. The only problem with that is if you go into an area where emissions testing is required, the ministry can pull you over. If they find that the vehicle is missing emission components that were on the vehicle from the factory they can fine you. The fine is also determined by the number of components missing so it can add up quick.

If your destination in Ontario is close to Ottawa, then you can do what I do - live in Quebec and make the 15min commute to Ottawa for work.

Quebec has no e-test or emissions-related regulations other than the fact that the first time you register the car you have to pass inspection where the emissions equipment must be "present and intact" but not necessarily functional (visual check only)

Plus the insurance here is cheaper (like $400/yr for my FB) and as an added bonus - free college (don't know if you're college age or not, but I thought I'd throw it out there)
