I look at it the way 23racer mentioned it, I want some acknowledgement. The problem is that some people just don't get it. They didn't see you in their mirrors 10 seconds ago, now you're all over them, but they think they're racing you.
I can't necessarly hold my line the way someone passing might be expecting so I'm not willing to sit back and make them do all the work. I often drive harder than my skill level so I'm not consistant.

geez, all this talk of passing and crashing is scaring me, lol.
i know that it will be my main concern on the track...does physically waving the car behind you by with your hand out the window work good?

For those who are considering going, make sure that your cooling system is in tip-top shape. With the weather we're having it should be very hot and you will be running well above normal temp levels. The same with your brakes. If you haven't changed your fluid recently do so and ensure you have decent pads with a good amount of meat left in them.
Another point worth mentioning is tires. You can spend physically 8 hours on the track. If you spend even a full hour's worth of time on the track it can be very expensive if you have good street tires on your car. You may want to consider getting something you feel comfortable throwing in the garbage afterwards. I can't comment on Rs, but I get the impression that at Shannonville they don't have much more life than a street tire.
I don't think anyone is trying to scare anyone else, just be prepared. You won't regret going.

Even if we don't hit the track due to the heat (I know my coolant temps would go through the roof, within a few laps, on a 30C day) a few of us are planning on coming down just to check the action...
...I think Desert Lake Road may be in order as well

yeah, this was something i was wondering about. i spent quite a bit on my street tires, so maybe i will just throw something on my stock rims...but i mean, tires make a big difference, right? i'm just guessing you don't want to be running on some pure crap tires, lol.

For your first time in particular, the tires won't matter much. Being 2 seconds a lap faster won't make any real difference.
I've run at Shannonville with Yokohama ES100s (which for me are expensive), Bridgestone RE92s (Z-rated all seasons, not great - stock WRX, Prelude tire) and BFG Comp TAs (Z-rated all season, not great - stock mustang). There's no question that the ES100s were faster, but after a few laps they seemed to heat up and lose much of their advantage. Perhaps that was due to overdriving them, but I think it would happen anyway. I spent a fraction of the time with the ES100s compared to the other two types and yet if one assigned a dollar amount to the wear, it cost me more on the ES100s than it did to completely destroy the other two types! (the BFGs had the belts haning out of 2 of the tires! They were delaminating and had a nasty vibration.)
Another point worth mentioning is that in my experience (this may not be fact), when the tread of the tire is deeper it wears away faster under these conditions. For a beginner who wants to be able to spend a lot of time during a day on the track, I think picking up some used tires is the way to go. As for the rims, I would recommend not using expensive fancy rims. If you have the right kind of off course excursion rocks and gravel will pumble your rims and damage the appearance. Stock rims are what I used. In fact if I had some money I would buy some used OEM 15" rims because often 15" tires are cheaper.

yup, i have the stock rims for my car sitting behind my parents garage.
like you mentioned, the tires i currently have on i consider expensive (about $800 for the set), so i'll be on the look out for some used tires.
and yeah, it's not really an issue of how fast i go. i couldn't care less about how fast i am getting around the track at this point, i just want to learn.
thanks for the advice, i think i would definetly regret destroying my street tires

NP on the advice. I don't know much and if you haven't figured it out, it's pretty much my favorite topic. I'm trying to live vicariously through you.
Solution: Since Mr. Cake was here first, we'll continue to call him "Aaron." You can be "Aaron with an RX-7" since you have a RX-7 and he doesn't.

Mosport Full Track Event
Just to clarify PD Day's comments. Mosport August 14th is actually a regional race weekend with a focus on Mazda's. I have had only about 4 people show interest in a full track controlled pace lapping session and no responses from the Protege club or from the Miata club at all.
I tried to coordinate the event with the meeting of the Mazda's by offering them the free use of Mosport to hold their meet and the possibility of controlled lapping. They never responded to my e-mails and in fact moved the date of their meet to the same weekend. They are holding it on the Saturday so I am hoping that we can attract a number of people from the meet to come to Mosport on Sunday. Unless we can get over 20 confirmed cars, I doubt that I can get the Race Organizers to set aside a period, on Sunday, for an on track session.
Al Balinsky, 01 Racing, is going to the Meet of the Mazda's on Saturday and will be handing out free passes to the Mosport day on Sunday. At the very least we should have a great meet with Al, myself and possibly 20b Rotors 3 rotor FC on track in various races. If we can pre confirm over 20 cars, I can arrange the on-track session.
Regards,
Eric
