ON insurance?

Hey,
I've been looking at picking up an FC for a while now, and I've finally come across a couple cars that I like. I called my insurance company today (AllState) and they told me they would not insure any vehicle with modifications to enhance their speed. They essentially implied the aftermarket muffler on my taurus was not to be insured. I was just wondering if you guys let your insurance know about any mods, or how you get by with it, and what companies are being used?

I have yet to notify my company of any mods, and until I get the body work done I won't bother. If the car gets written off, then I'll just buy it back and use the payout to swap everything to a new shell. When I call my broker after the body is done I'll have him find me a company thats good with modified cars if my current company isn't.

I'm with Aviva and surprisingly enough my car is listed as a class 1 vehicle which means the cheapest possible insurance with that company. My insurance guy was more surprised than I was - my moms Mazda 3 is a class 6.
I don't have a pile of mods done, but none are visible from the exterior of the car, and I don't have any claimed with the company. I guess it depends on how extensive the mods are and whether or not you're willing to pay extra insurance for having them (if you can find insurance).
Good Luck!

related to the main question:

does it matter if its only liability thats on the car?
or both liability and comprehensive would matter to matters involving modifications?

Hey, sorry for being away, extremely busy week! r4itei, even with just liability it matters. I've talked to a couple companies, and everyone just tells me they won't insure a company with modifications. DesJardins said it was fine with an exhaust, but if there is any other modifications to the engine that increase 'speed' (that's what everyone says, speed of car lol) they will not insure it.

I was informed that marine insurance will insure any modified vehicle, but they limit you to 3000km/year which they check on, they said they insure show cars, nothing more lol) and they wanted 5 000 a year.

I'm surprised it's listed as a class 1, but the year is a big factor too. I was told it didn't matter if i got a turbo or NA it would be the same price too.
orion, i've been informed a few times now that if you are in an accident and an insurance adjuster sees any modifications the insurance company was not aware of, they do not have to cover you. so knock on wood and drive safe.

I am with The Co-operators, and it's cheap for my FD..... I didn't let them know about any mods..... When I bought my FD, it came with the Racing Beat Muffler, I didn't let the insurance company know, they took pics of my car all around, and that's it.

Lastly, they think that my BOSE acoustic sound system is an aftermarket speaker and sub, but I argue that it's original sound system that came with my FD.....

Ka-Kui what kind of mods other than the muffler?

Excellent question, I have been talking with Remy from DesJardins, and he's been helpful so far. I'm going to see if I can talk to him tonight, or tomorrow, don't know their hours of operations. And I believe they mean ponies when they say speed, otherwise, if you removed your interior to lighten the vehicle your effectively increasing speed. OF COURSE NOT BY MUCH lol

Just say there are no mods. If they come check it they don't know squat. All they really care about is sound systems you can see or things that make the car look rice. When inspector came to look at my car all they cared about was my $20 deck that didn't work.

Intercooler: only cools the air, car came with one
turbo: car came with a turbo
exhaust: its just louder

Ironically, the insurance companies all told me that I could throw on rims and a massive wing and a body kit. If theft is on the car, they'll be concerned about this stuff, but with just liability they don't car. (in regards to stereos atleast)

When i used to work at the ford dealer i talked to a few adjusters when I was in the body shop. Some of them were as dumb as nails, and couldn't tell you what a tyre was, but others could tell you where the oil filter and air box is located on every car.

I also didn't get a chance to talk to Remy today, so I'll be contacting him Monday.

Hey man, Other than the Racing Beat muffler, my FD was bone stock when I purchase in 2005.... The insurance inspector didn't comment on the muffler, he only bug me on the BOSE Acoustic Wave, I kept saying it's come with the car, stock sound system... I even point out that the trunk cover perfectly fits the BOSE system, so he finally believe the BOSE comes with the FD.... (He said the BOSE system is too nice for a 1993 car back in the days, lol)

Ain't it great when people who don't know jack try to tell those who do what's what. I guess the factory Bose audio in my 96 Passat wasn't really factory, either. It wasn't really that good, but it was Bose.

Many years ago, my brother had a 77 Buick Skylark (Nova with a "landau" half-vinyl roof) with a non-factory Bose stereo - that was an upgrade from the factory 8-track
