If it's the screws on top of the tank, you could try to make a "notch" in them with a Dremel tool .and use a flathead screw driver,or cut the heads off and retap the screw holes..they may come out with Vise-grips after you get the Top off(may be enough left to get a grip on them)..as far as leaving the Pump in and using an inline pump..I'm not sure of that..Also Craftsman makes a screw remover for those Screws that are "rounded out"..no "X' left on a phillips..all I can give ya..

You can't use the factory pump to suck fuel thru. Unless theres another way I've overlooked, but I've tried it. Simply doesnt work for some reason.

just drill the heads off the old screws or cut them off etc. once the cover is off you'll be able to get them with the vice grips

Im so lucky - swapping pumps on the 87 TII.....in fact all the work Ive done to it....has been cracking screws/nuts/bolts, and unthreading them the rest of the way by hand...I love this baby!!

Yeah I would say try notching them or drill them out - you gonna let a few screws stop ya from driving your rotary rocket? get out the drill....hehe

Unless you have one hell of a gem of a car, those screws won't come out. Ever.

All the FC's I've owned, only ONE CAR I've managed to remove the screws (my 10ae )

but if you drill them out, you can get them with vise grips and they come out easily.

If you search the 2nd Gen Forum for "fuel pump rant" and my name, you should come up with a long thread dealing with removal options for rusted fuel pump flange screws.
