I used to be in your position a while ago. I was looking for a RHD Japanese one to import and I even test drove a few (feels weird driving on the right). I thought they would be cheaper, have lower mileage, and better kept. However that is rarely the case, especially the auction cars. If you carefully look at the FDs in Japanese auctions or even the Tyee Imports stock, you'll see that all of them are not worth buying even if they are cheap.
I eventually found a LHD mint condition 93 in the states with low miles that I brought over.
After owning a FD and getting first hand experience dealing with maintenance issues and preventative measures, I highly recommend spending the extra time and money getting a LHD one imported from the US. Many of the ones for sale here in Canada, especially dealers, have questionable backgrounds.
I was really lucky. The FD I bought was incredible, in almost new condition. 100% stock and unmolested with super low miles. Even though I got a great condition one, I still had to spend a great deal of money to make it reliable to drive. You don't want to drive a RX-7 around without knowing if something might go wrong any second. For me I mainly concentrated on reliability mods for peace of mind.
If you buy a cheap FD from Japan or not, your maintenance and repair bills will quickly sky rocket. Remember that after you buy your FD, you still need money to make sure it keeps on running well. Like changing all your fluids, synthetic gear and diff oil, metal AST, downpipe, fuel filter, plugs, bushings, alignment, etc... and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

my point is that rx7ken said he would rather have a lhd......9/10 guys would.......therefore he can get one from the states ......and he can fly down and drive it back.........not buying sight unseen.....an american fd is much easier to get safetied, insured and will have better resale
expect to pay a little more.......maybe 14-17....but a jdm fd priced @ 11,000$ is more then likely a rough pos

This is a copy / paste of a reply I made in another topic:
I just felt like showing you some pics of an FD I'm importing for less than 10$ (all fees, taxes, customs and ***** included) to canada... its one of the many stock rx7 I've seen in the japanese auctions. The body is rated 4.0 in the auction (max is 5.0 and is practically impossible for a car thats 13 yrs old). I can see why you guys are affraid of importaing cars becuse most shops who do so are a rip off. You need to do business with the right person / company. RX7KENN, The guy I told you about added you on MSN messenger I think, I suggest you go talk to him

Not to shabby Benji...........it definetly looks like u gotta an above average jdm.
i think most importers out west here would sell that car for at least 14k ....depending on mlieage of course....
i have just heard so many horror stories of cars being peiced together from theft recovery and write offs......odometers rolled back.......and damage in shipping due to the way they load the cargo ships.........
and if u are not as lucky as yourself.........u are gonna end up with a a pile of repair bills..........mechanical and cosmetic
i do admit that i have a little animosity towards a rhd drive fd...........i have one of 50 fds that were sold in canada in 1994.......bought it with 58,000 kms just over a couple of yrs ago....
my biggest beef with the jdm cars are the ones that come over looking like complete ***.........faded paint.......body kits hangin off.......interior just a disaster..........it is slowly hurtin the reputation of the fds here in canada.........
IF u import a nice car like Benji's I am all for it......

Also, LOTS of them fill the containers containg the cars with loads of parts, which more around and hit the cars during transportation and cause damage. Some companies even try and fit 6+ cars in a container that's supposed to fit 4, etc. That's why I'm saying that you need to do business with the right company / person.
(and the honest ones are very rare, trust me)Mine has 92k kms and was bought on a japanese dealer auction (not so sure to name it actually, my english is bad) which is very trustable. Basically, those auctions are meant to be available for japanese car dealers only.
Anyways, I made my point. If money wasn't a problem, I would probably jump on a lhd FD, but right now, I prefer to save 5000$ on a JDM of equal quality
, but right now, I prefer to save 5000$ on a JDM of equal quality
So I prefer a JDM price wise cheaper.
I see whats you mean about the LHD American Cars.
But to be completely honest I'd rather deal with someone over sea's then trust an american...BUT If I can't find a clean importer, thats the route i'm going I need it to be VERY clean. Low mileage. But High mileage doesn't matter, Cuz I want a Street port almost instanly.
No offense to all americans, just some of them will see "canada"
and be "**** you" but to Japan or wherever its the same **** to them.
lol.
thanks boys, keep talkin.
I like reading your opinions.
If you lost your license I'm sure insurance will be cheap

and I'm not a newb when it comes to rx7/rotary.
I know these sons of bitches cost hella $$. =(
Hey Benji, Your importing that car?
Your importer said that was the car for sale, he sent me tons of pics.
and he said you bought a car today. So i take it he wasnt reffering to "THAT" car.
So you bought that car yesterday, and now he's trying to sell me the same car?
OH BTW- He said it rated 3.7.
None the less very clean FD.
You importers got my buisness once I meet with him, and get my **** together.
but any other importer recomondations would help great!
or even a cheap place in the usa to get one imported here for a quality price.
thanks
It will be! I just get my girlfriend to register it she gets 25% off!
and I'm not a newb when it comes to rx7/rotary.

, mine was rated 4.0, but the blue one semeed to be cleaner. I don't think he's trying to sell the same car to two different persons
, he showed me the blue one and the black one, I picked the black cauz I prefer that color
. Anyways don't be affraid to chat with him, he's very talkative and helpful when you need it

How much did you guys pay for your fd's?
I could search but theres lots of U.S$$
I would search on the internet but 1/2 of the posts are scams.
"I'm from belgum and the cars in Vancouver"
etc.
So sorry for the newb post, but I wouldn't mind knowing an Exact/approx price$
and can you still get theres imported by the dealers, so that i dont need to ****** safety it. Or do they still even have domestic LHD?
body shops are backed up the ***, and i dont feel like waiting to drive it once i save up enough cash. I'm really only asking so I can budget my money properly.
Thanks ahead of time Ken.
PS sorry again for this post. Just I would like to know.

im selling mine fir 22k
In all honesty, buying a car from japan is risky but can be worth it. I honsetly kinda got screwed with mine. When I got the car it looked and ran great, but as soon as I put my foot into it the engine blew. I got it for a really good price, but that really good price soon turned into not such a really good price after I put over $8000 into a new engine. Most of the times you are better off buying a car thats already imported and safety inspected. I got my car safetied not too long ago and luckily the only thing I had to change was the tires since the original tires were cracked. But other than that everything was mechanically good. I know a few people who have imported FD's and I'm one of the few who have had their motor blow, but most people have had some sort of mechanical issue with their car. Mostly clutches, and if the clutch is gone than you know that the car has been beeten and sooner than later you will most likely need a new engine.
