Help in Ottawa or Montreal: GSL-SE rear hatch glass?

Hi everybody.

I'm visiting my sister in Ottawa (I live in Montreal) and some kid broke out my rear hatch glass in her driveway this afternoon.

Needless to say, Mazda doesn't have one so I'm looking for help to find someone with a with a spare to sell. Hopefully before I try to drive it home.

1984 GSL-SE.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
John.

Thank you!

I'll look into those two.

I was kind of hoping someone had one sitting in their garage in Ottawa, but I realize I'm likely dreaming.

I appreciate the help,
John.

I'm in Kitchener area, and have a couple spares. You can have one free if you arrange pickup.

Hi renns.

Amazing offer, and very much appreciated! Thank you.
Arranging pick-up is the tricky part... I've sent you a pm.

Not much left of the old one...

Thanks again, renns.

John.

Too bad you didn`t need it last week. I sent a very rotten 83 gsl to the crushers last week, and somehow forgot to take out the rear hatch glass.

sa7/FJ, maybe call the wreckers that picked up sa7's shell, and see if it has not been crushed yet. That would save shipping my big piece of glass!

FJ,

Attached is a snapshot from the FSM. It looks like there was a change in glass for later GSL-SE's, likely that tint colour we talked about on the phone. Do you happen to know if yours is the earlier or later version?

I'll go dig mine out now, and check tint colour.

Thanks again, renns. I was just about to look that up.

Mine is indeed the early version, so a GSL glass should work as well.

I found the reference to tint I had mentioned and that was regarding an '85, so the later part number for that one. Apparently, they went from a green tint to bronze.

I've sent sa7 a pm and will be in touch with you Monday morning.

Have a great trip this weekend,
John.

I have a free 85 SE hatch in Richmond Hill (about 10 min north of the 401) if that's closer for you. It doesn't have a wiper motor btw. I don't know the tint colour either but you're welcome to have it.

Just got back to Montreal. The sound of flapping plastic gets old rather quickly...

Thank you, G-man. Now that I know the GSL version will do the trick also, I'll try to find one more local to me. If that doesn't work fairly soon I'll take renns up on his offer as we are quite sure his is the proper tint. Appreciate the offer, though!

I'll give them a call first thing Monday. Thanks for your effort, sa7.

On a side note, for those of you who haven't read the story (saga, really) of the Stacey who I mentioned in post nine you can find it here: https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/staceys-stolen-rx-7-gsl-se-191072/.
Quite the lady!

Thanks everyone,
John.

Just curious....where were you parked? A little alarming someone would smash the back of your car.

Hi Duane.

It was in front of my sister's house in Nepean.

The picture in post 5 shows the location. It happened between 4 and 5 Pm. In broad daylight! A very nice neighborhood, but brats are everywhere...

You're right about that. I must have looked like Bambi in the headlights when I saw it.
Never mind all of the scratches on the paint, which was the factory paint (I'm the original owner); "alarming" would probably qualify for understatement of the year.

I'm just bitching now...
John.

The fact you are the original owner makes it even worse. Really sorry about your bad luck. I've owned 3 different first gens over the last 10 years in Ottawa and never had anyone vandalize my car. Really surprised someone would go after it. Shame.

Hope the scratches buff out.

Cheers,
Duane

No luck yet in finding a replacement.

sa7:I finally got a hold of the owner yesterday, and yours went straight to the crusher. He gave me their number, and they have no lot. They're squished as soon as they arrive, so no luck there. Thanks for the lead, though!

Hi Duane. Your screen name caused me to look up the version of that song by Manhatten Transfer. Hadn't heard it in a while so thanks for that.

The search continues...
John.

I got one from 85 gsl-se in Kaladar, nearly 2 hours West of Ottawa. If you're interested you could come remove it and take it for $40, untinted.

Thanks "captain".

Appreciate it. If I was still in Ottawa I would take you up on your offer, but it's over a four hour drive for me now...

I had a reply to my request in the classified section, but he hasn't gotten back to me yet. Seems like that might be my best bet at the moment.
Does anyone in Toronto know James (TORONTO RX7)?

Thanks,
John.

Problem solved...

I just wanted to thank everyone who offered a hand.

James (TORONTORX7) tried hard to help out, but time was a problem.

Major thanks to renns. Not only did he give me the glass, in excellent condition, he delivered it to the UPS store. Can't thank you enough, Roger!

Appreciate everyone's help,
John.
