Help! Oil cooler question

I was doing an oil change on my 84 gsl-se and figured I'd be meticulous about it and drain the oil cooler too. When I took out the drain bolt, some kind of valve and sprin came flying out. I could see which direction or order the parts came out.

There is a valve with a spring on one end, and a more coarse spring. I don't know which order they go back together.

From the bottom of the cooler, it seems the big spring goes in first, followed by the valve with the spring side facing upwards, followed by the drain plug.

Can anybody tell me it this is the correct order, and particularly if the valve goes with the spring end up or down?

Thanks in advance....

Rob

That's not a drain bolt - that's a bypass valve. And I also remove it every time I do an oil change to drain the oil cooler. You were on the right track.

You put it back together correctly.

Now that is hardcore oil changing

Next time you can be even more hardcore and test the valve to see that it still opens at spec temperature

Technically, the valve closes as the right temperature.

Actually the story gets much better....

Amur and I traded a few PM's last night. The story got a lot better though, here's part of a message I sent Amur last night....

Just got back inside. Damn you know how one thing leads to another....When taking the undertray off, I found somebody was messing aroung in there. All the bolts are new, and on each corner there is supposed to be a "L" shaped bracket welded to the frame, and they have both rusted off. I'll have to make some new ones and weld them on. To get at the passenger side, I had to remove the inner fenderwell, exposing the tank and pump for the headlight washers. I only got the car late last September, and haven't been over everything yet, so I checked the headlight washer, and guess what, the pump aint working. Boy is that thing a bitch to get out of there! I'll try and take it apart and unseize the motor. Had to do the same thing to the rear washer and got it to work so I'm hopeful. Now an oil change had turned into yet another "project".

Thanks again!

Rob

Life's never dull, is it???

Now I got the pump working, just have to put it back into the car tonight - another 2 hrs of crawling around spraining muscles I didn't know I had....
