Fast Responding EGT Probes?

Anyone know where I can get some high quality EGT probes that respond quick so they can be used for tuning?

Ludwig recommended these ones to me. Says he hasn't killed one yet despite being open element and on a rotary.

FWIW though my pineapple dual EGT kit seems to respond pretty quickly....I'd be interested to try these out though and I very well may.

That's 0.3 seconds. Should be enough for tuning in 4th gear.

Why not wideband?

Marco has a wideband. EGT will tell you a host of other conditions though......AFR isn't the all important piece of the tuning puzzle.

AFR + EGT are really both tools you need to take a car to its limits (safely!). Tuning with AFR's is basically tuning on existing knowledge/experience. EGT's tell you how much further you can take it before detonating both in timing and running leaner. Also next year I plan to install a methanol kit and tune to 20+ PSi and an EGT will really help there.

yes... just because you are at 11:1 doesn't mean you aren't getting knock, EGT helps you decipher that sort of stuff aswell.

Also, since I'm going to be monitoring both I'll be able to compensate any differences in front and rear rotor as the rear rotor is common to run leaner then the primary.

Anyone know if its possible to split an EGT probe signal into 2? Was hoping I didn't need to install 3 probes and could make the gauge leech off one of the logging ones instead.

Not really. The wire that is used to connect the probe to your logger or gauges is actually part of the circuit that creates the voltage output that is being read by your gauge. If you use regular copper wire to split the signal it will ruin the output of the sensor. It's possible to use more EGT specific loom but it would again be very easy to skew the output. It's best to have a dedicated probe for each gauge or logger.

Guess I'll put the gauge post-turbo then since its not important. Don't wanna restrict my manifolds more then I have to. BTW, I received the EGT probe's. They look very high quality and have compression fittings so you can adjust the height of the probe in the exhaust

Watch when you install everything that the probe doesn't gawl up on the compression ring. I had one of them stick the probe and couldn't get the probe out of it. Wasn't such a big deal. Had to cut the ring off and order some new ones from mcmaster.com but it was a pita for a minute. Putting a thin coat of anti seize on the probe should do the trick. Same for the threads on the compression fitting. But that should go without saying.

Does anyone have a picture of these open element probes handy??

I'm looking at the pics of the ones on the website, and the ones with my prosport kit and I'd swear they're the same.

My old thermocouples (with the hewitt/pineapple EGT) looked like this:

The new ones (i'll post a pic tomorrowish) are thin, no bulbous end, with compression fittings!

The ones I have gotten from the link above look just like the ones pictured on their website. I haven't bought new ones in some time though so maybe they've changed?
