Which compressor/ait tools do you use/recommend?
Hey guys,
I'm looking to do a bunch of work come this winter and I'm looking for an impact gun to take off some annoying bolts.
I don't want an expensive system, looking to spend no more then $400 total for some essential items. I was just looking for one of the smaller portable compressors and some addequate tools to get the job done.
I was looking at the Campbell-Hausfeld kit or Hot Rod kit at Canadian Tire...
What compressors do you use?
I was thinking I would just need an air impact gun and an air rachet, any other suggestions?
I was also thinking of using electric, would you recommend an electric impact over air?
Thanks for the help.

Any compressor that requires oil is a safe bet, the oil less ones are junk. Ingersoll Rand is a great pneumatics company, Chicago Pneumatic is good as well, buy tools once, take care of them, and you never have to buy them again.
+1 for Ingersoll Rand.
CT carried the 2100 for like 200$ around Christmas, don't know if they still have them.
Great gun, relatively light and quiet and has more torque than you'll need. IR is a name to trust.

Good advice above.
I wouldn't get less than a 20gallon tank but obviously choose what's in your budget. Make sure motor is continuous duty.
+2 for IR. I have a quiet series impact and it is amazing but expensive. I also have a husky and it works great too.

If you can spring on a two stage this means that the compressor works pretty much half the amount of time to maintain it's nominal level of pressure (your ears won't be ringing from the compressor constantly coming on). Definitely shoot for something like a vertical or horizontal 20+ gallon and pay close attention to the scfm figure as it is the real measure of how efficient the unit is and what tools it will realistically run.

If you buy an impact with a rating of about 200 ft pd it'll run and run and run and your compressor will also run and run and run.
If you but an impact with close to 300 ft pd it'll undo that bolt in a snap and your gun and compressor won't be continuously running.
I have a 27 gallon tank but a 200 ft pd gun and those stubborn bolts are stressing the compressor, so I am overdriving the gun with too much air pressure until it dies and then I'll buy a 300 ft pd impact.

For an impact gun to work properly, you'll need at least around 4 CFM @ 90 psi. I have a CH brought from CT (came as a kit with the impact gun, air ratchet and bunch of other stuff for like 250$.) I still see that kit on sale from time to time. I had to have it fixed after it stopped working by itself the second time I used it, but it's been fine since then. Didn't cost me anything after some time spent on the phone with the CT store manager.
IR 2131 or the latest equivalent....it blasts through everything with its 600 lb*ft in reverse....spend the money on a good impact...it was the best $200 I had ever spent 4 years ago. IMO the other air tools in those kits are fine, but you need a proper impact gun.
1/3 off all compressors at Crappy T with this coupon!!

I forgot to mention I had that coupon. I ended up getting the Hot Rod compressor and Air tool kit for ~$350 including taxes.
It was the only one in my price range that seemed to have the specs needed for other tools as well. I'll go bigger one day, but I think this should do the trick for now...
