Calgary area annual RX7 meet/ BBQ

*This post has been updated to reflect a change from the originally-selected date for this event*

The annual Calgary/ Black Diamond RX7 meet/ cruise/ BBQ was tentatively scheduled for Sunday, June 24th, 2007, but this date apparently does not work for several members.

Therefore, we need to take a vote on the following available dates:

Sunday, June 17th.

Sunday, July 8th.

Sunday, July 15th.

Sunday, July 22nd.

Sunday, July 29th.

The date that gets the most votes will be the one that becomes official, with a rain date to be determined."

Initial meet and greet will be at Deerfoot mall parking lot (Deerfoot and 64th in the Northeast) at 11am, followed by the cruise to Black Diamond leaving Deerfoot mall at 1pm. This should provide an arrival time at the BBQ at around 1:45 to 2pm.

Here's the address:

208 3rd street N.W. Black Diamond, AB.

For those unfamiliar with this town, not to worry--- our house is very easy to find:

To get to Black Diamond via Deerfoot trail and Okotoks:

- Head south on Deerfoot, exiting the south of Calgary completely.

- Once you arrive at the point where Deerfoot merges with highway 2 southbound, get into the right lane and take the hwy 2A exit westbound.

- This will take you into Okotoks, about 8km farther along. Drive straight through Okotoks on the same route until you come to the intersection of Hwy 7. You'll see a Canadian Tire, Walmart and Sobeys in the complex to your left, and a sign on your right that indicates Black Diamond turn right.

- Turn right at the intersection of Hwy 7 and follow Hwy 7 westbound for 18 km. This will put you in Black Diamond, population: "We're working on it." Watch your speed coming into town, particularly where the speed limit drops from 100km/hr to 70, then from 70 to 50. The chances of a speed trap being set up there is directly proportional to how nice the weather is on that day.

- You'll come to a 4-way stop less than a minute later, in the center of town. Go straight through this intersection, then turn right three blocks later onto third street, just before the strip mall. Our house will be the tan house one and a half blocks down on your right-hand side.

On the other hand, if you're coming in from highway 22 southbound (which will take you through Turner Valley first, watch for speed traps as you exit Turner Valley. They like to snag people as they start down a mild slope eastbound leaving town, where the speed limit is lower than it has any right to be. If taking this route, you'll be entering Black Diamond from the west:

- Once you cross the bridge entering Black Diamond (where the speed limit drops from 80 to 50) you'll see a strip mall on your left. Turn left just past the strip mall onto 3rd street. Our house is the tan one that's 1-1/2 blocks down on your right.

We could make Deerfoot mall a primary meeting place for north residents, then proceed to westhills for a secondary location and take the country cruise through Bragg Creek and Truner Valley like last year.........participants choice.

Can't make it for 2 yrs running now.
Argghh.
Any chance of a BBQ just for me some other time???

What are you thinking about for a cruise? Down to Longview then west to the Park for photo ops would be cool, but you'd have to take the same route back.

Good luck and have fun!

I'm in a wedding party on the 23rd aswell. But the wedding is just outside of Airdrie so I can't see why I can't make it.

Are we just bringing our own steaks and drinks and just cook them at your place? Do you want everyone to bring a snack aswell? like a bag of chips or somethign for everyone to snack on?

Yeah, I'm out. I'm busy all day, dammit. I'm actually going to be in K-country for the day. If things work out, I'll come back via LongView and drive by, but I won't have my car.

Can I ask how that date was chosen? I mean, it's fine to have a meet on Mother's Day, but Father's Day is a no go?

We choose mothers day because at the time, we didnt know it was mothers day.

I think brett is trying to make up another holiday. Like Fathers day weekend, Canada day weekend. Rx-7 Day Weekend. Never know, it could catch on.

Last years' meet fell on the 23rd and went over well. Still, we thought long and hard about what date would work for the largest number of people.

Since it's virtually impossible to pick a date where there's not at least a couple of hardcore members who can't make it we first eliminated the obvious no-gos, ie: the long weekends. Too many people seem to have other (out-of-town) plans on those.

Fathers' day probably wouldn't be much of an obstacle for most, but we figured it might prune a few members off the guest list so we avoided it as well. The Mothers' day turnout wasn't exactly record-breaking either, but the weather may also have played a part there.

But now (so far) it seems we still have several members who won't make the 24th. Since we just had a mini meet last weekend it seems ludicrous to plan a BBQ sooner than the third weekend in June. This leaves Sunday, July 8th, Sunday, July 15th, Sunday July 22nd or (my birthday) Sunday, July 29th--- with one of the latter dates being a rain date. We might just have to take a poll here and go with the most popular vote of the four weekends in July. Let the voting begin.

Arggh. :
July 8 Africa
July 15 Europe
July 23 Edmonton (ChampCar Race)
July 30 Georgian Bay

My stars will not align for a July BBQ, unfortunately.

And you can take the FD for a spin anytime, Brett.

July 23 Edmonton (ChampCar Race)

July 23rd would be the Monday following the proposed Sunday July 22nd date. Where are you on that day?

That's mighty brave, er... generous of you Ed! Looking forward to the privaledge.

As for the rest of you guys and girls, if we're going to pick a July date, or even Fathers' day (June 17th, with no rain date until July), we'd better agree on one soon--- while this thread is still only one page long. Once done, I can ask the mods to allow me to change the original post to reflect the new date, thereby avoiding the possibility of having people show up on the wrong day.

So here are the choices:

Sunday, June 17th (Fathers' day), with a rain date of Sunday, July 8th.

Sunday, July 8th, with a rain date of Sunday, July 15th.

Sunday, July 15th, with a rain date of Sunday, July 22nd.

Sunday, July 22nd, with a rain date of Sunday, July 29th.

We'll go with the majority vote, and once agreed on we'll have to stick to it. Then we can iron out the details of who wants to bring what, which route, pre-meet times and locations, etc.

Still need some further input here. As mentioned above, the available dates are June 17th, July, 8th, July 15th, July 22nd and July 29th. The original June 24th date seems to not work for most so it will be changed.

The sooner we get some votes the sooner we can pick a firm date and plan the details.

I say stick with June 24, too many people will have vacations in July, stampede week, etc. We should nail the date down, those who can make it will. There will always be those who don't no matter what the date.

Put me down for June 17th or July 29th. I won't be around for the others.

If the meet ends up being on Father's Day, I'll try to come back from K-Country via Longview, but I won't be driving the RX-7.
