Buying a Spirit R and riding it "legally"...
You guys think it would be possible to buy a Spirit R, then take the firewall badge off my '92 FD3S then do a nice welding on the Spirit R so that it would be "street legal"? (My actual '92 RHD RX-7 is legal in Canada). I mean, if I do a really nice welding, how authorities will see what I've done?
It's simply a question that I've been asking myself for too long!

Constant threat
Why wouldn't the Spirit R be legal where you are at? Is this car already in Canada? I mean, if it isn't, just GETTING it here will raise all sorts of flags if for some reason it isn't 'legal'. Why would it be any more hassle to get this car 'legal' than the RHD car you already have?
And what happens to the car you have now? You suddenly have no ID plates for it...how are you going to get rid of it? Finally, it is a highly punishable offense to do anything of the nature you propose in the States...one would assume Canada would have similar laws.

Quebec currently has a 6- month moratorium on RHD cars imported into the province. They are doing a study if RHD cars are to blame for the high rate of accidents on two lane roads.
Im sure the OP can attest to this. Sucks bc currently they are over 3000 RHD drive vehicles in QC imported from Japan.

I'm glad Moosejaw pointed that out, because this is pretty much the fact.
Years ago I imported my Bathurst from the neighbor-to-the-north and it'd already gone through all of the bullshit that seems to plague people when they import a car....
Unfortunately, the dick ALSO converted it to LHD. Not sure WHY he did this, but when I bought it and ran the VIN, I was pleasantly surprised to see some oddities in it's life... Got the full docs and saw it's birth as an 'R'. To England (Bathurst) then Canada as an idiot's toy.
I'd say to figure out if the wait is worth it. Kind of like importing an R34: You can do it, it CAN be done. Legally you'll have to wait a while, but the inverse.....

dont do it.. your gonna ruin all the importing for everyone.. people that break the rules instead of waiting are jerks, because that is what is pushing the government of canada to change the rule.

i highly suggest you dont even think about it unless your willing to bring in the chassis and the driveline seperatley then register it as a new car.

OK guys thanks for your opinions.
By the way moosejaw the moratorium ended. We can't import anymore RHD but we can keep it if we imported it before April 29th, 2008.
bajaman I think you are right, that simply importing it would be a huge PITA.
My current plate would be no problem, I gave this as an example... there's some freshly ruined FD in Quebec I could take their plate.
But anyway, I asked the question as a theory.
