Buying an engine from the U.S
Hey guys, im buying an engine from this dude in Hawaii. I paid roughly 2200 CDN for the thing. I've never imported an engine before and im not too sure what the custom tariffs will end up being. I don't even know if thats the only fee i have to pay. I'm wondering if anyone here has done anything like this, if you have could you please tell me a bit about your experience and any advice your willing to pass along
Also the guy i bought the engine from also needs a commercial invoice and a few other papers. Is getting a broker the best route to handle these forms?
Thanks in advance.

Hawaii?!?!?!? Cut your losses and walk away unless it's a P-Port special something or other. If you are going through with it have him devalue it on all documentation, say $500 and then you'll only get whacked for the applicable duties and taxes. If you mark an item clearly as "Used Auto Parts" then you will avoid part of the duties also.

Hey thanks for your replies, i should of specified that this isn't a 13b. But matt thanks for your offer, if you still have it i might take you up on it in the future.
I made a couple of phone calls to the border agency and i found some things out that might be helpfull to you guys in the future. If the parts/engine was manufactered in North America then you don't pay tariff customs. Seein that I live in alberta all i'm going to pay is 5% gst . Also i looked into getting a broker, I called a firm in B.C but the quote i got from them was 170$ RIPOFF! i called another local firm in calgary and they said that i shouldn't need a broker. If the freight company is bonded, then i can take the forms (Commerical invoice, which you can get off of the canada border agency website as well as the Bill of lading) to the border agency's office and they can clear the item there, doing this saves the 170$ broker fee. I called the broder office and they told me this is the case. Anyway if you were considering doing something like this i hope this helps you.
