Exclamation Broken Key

The only key I have to my FD broke in half - it didn't get stuck so a new key should be able to be made easily.

Does anyone know where in Toronto I can have a new key made? Would I have to special order an FD specific blank somewhere?

Thanks!

Not too sure about RHD but you can bring the VIN of a LHD to a local dealer and they can cut you one based on that. Good luck.

Cheers. I did notice the key it came with has numbers stamped on it. I wonder if that means anything.

Well...you can just bring the locks to a good locksmith.....
When I bought my FD3S I had different key for my left & right door , I bought a blank Efini key from eBay and brought everything to him , I then ask him to make everything match the only key I had.
The efini key from eBay was a bit long he said (unusual) , and couldnt guarantee that he won't fu*k it up.
Call me back 2 days later , job done

I bought a blank rotary key a few months back on ebay (probably from the same seller as yours). I had it cut earlier this week when this happened and the cutter did a good job. Only problem is that I just noticed the key is narrower at the the tip compared to my own key. This is actually how the blank was prior to cutting, so I'm not sure if RHD is suppose to be wider or I just got a bad blank to begin with. So with this key, I am able to unlock the door, but I can't get it into the ignition all the way.

Contact Steve or Kengy @ Scarborough Mazda.....416-752-4310 and ask them, I believe if you give them your vin and the broken key they may be able cut one for you, Steve did mine many years ago for my 93 LHD. Tell them you're a member here and you should get a price break. Good luck,
Eddie

I think it's just the way they made the blank eBay key They made it "taller" Same thing with me for the ignition ,the key sticks out. I have a different key for ignition tho

From my experience at Mazda , giving a RHD VIN is useless... I order parts few times & I specifically had to know what I wanted from the LHD Parts Catalog I believe they have blank key in stock & And they send it to another company to be cut , don't quote me on this , they might cut they're own key too. Either way they have to assign a VIN number to the key That's where RHD people get screwed cause it doesn't "fit" in the computer.
Anyways that's what I've been told at my Mazda Dealership

North American Dealers can't cut us RHD keys. They cannot enter our vins into the system

Yep, I ordered 2 rotor keys. In case the first one got messed up by the key maker. Good thing too because the first one did get messed up when I took it to the Home Depot to make a duplicate.
On the 2nd attempt I took it to an actual key and lock place in Oak Ridges. All they dealt with is locks, keys and safe's. Did it right the first time out.
You'd be surprised how tricky it is to duplicate the master key. One uneven bump or ridge that's suppose to be sharp and the damn thing won't work in the ignition switch.

Sadly the lock and key place has closed up shop since then. Been about 5-6yrs since I had to duplicate the keys..

Hoping nothing ever goes wrong with my rotor key...

Thanks for all the responses. I did have that rotor key, but I'm starting to think that the key for LHD and RHD are different. The tip of my rhd key is wider, so unfortunately my rotor key doesn't work in the ignition. I'd like to be able to have this sorted ASAP - does anyone know where I would be able to order a Japanese key quickly shipped?

Cheers!

OEM Efini blank key or Spirit R blank key for RHD FD3S, I can only think of Yahoo Japan Auction. But it may take up to 1.5-2 weeks to arrive Toronto.

Spirit R one works, Rotor shaped seems to not fit for me either.

When you say not fit , do you mean it's too big(long) but still turn the ignition or do you mean it doesn't turn the ignition ?

Again, I appreciate all the help from everyone! I am very relieved that I now have a working key!
Huge thanks to Locksmiths & Safeman on Baldwin St. He didn't have the exact key as mine, but he managed to make it work and did it free of cost because he wasn't sure if it would work.
