Blue smoke cold start

Quick question from a rotary rookie.... My 85 GSL with 19,000kms(12,000 miles) puffs blue & grey smoke only on cold starts. After aprx 2 mins it looks and smells normal.
Is this normal???

Yes, completely normal. My 52K mile '84 GSL-SE does this on every cold start and it runs perfectly. Two minutes might be a bit long but if the blue smoke starts to reduce immediately, it's probably fine.

The two most cited reasons for this are due to mixing oil with the gasoline (either by pre-mix or the Oil Metering Pump) and due to a very rich mixture on cold starts, both of which are by design. See, most recently, this topic in the 1st Generation Specific forum.

Fairly normal and as long as the smoke doesn't continue after the startup, not a big deal.

Just the nature of the geometry of the engine and it being worn out a little. The engine shuts down and the rotors are still full of oil. Any inconsistency in the irons can cause the oil rings, sitting stationary, to not form a perfect seal. So there is some seepage. Combine that with a rich startup where fuel strips the oil from the irons, and you get the smoke.
